LOT 1255
- NSN, 60 Bore cal., 22 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/gold finish, fruitwood stock. This pistol
originates in the early 17th century and was subsequently elaborately embellished for the
thriving art market in the late 19th century, likely in the workshops of Frederic Spitzer. Nearly
all of the visible surfaces are decorated. The barrel is relief chiseled with an array of figures
with gilded backgrounds and a checkered pattern along the sides. There is a significant
step at the breech. The upper and lower tangs are engraved with masks and scroll designs
accented by gold backgrounds. The lock is similarly embellished. The stock has very fine
brass, silver, and pearl inlays along its length, and the delicate pearl inlays are engraved
with floral and bestial designs along with busts on the distinctive lemon shaped pommel.
Includes a coordinating wood ramrod with engraved tip.
An “A2239” inventory mark in red is on the dog spring. Includes a metal display stand.
CONDITION: Fine with beautiful decoration throughout, crisp chiseling and engraving on the
metal, the vast majority of the gold remaining, a mix of blue finish and dark patina on the
balance, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine with repairs, a few pieces of inlay absent
or replaced, some dings and scratches, and minor flakes. Lock not tested.
