Magnificent, Benchmark Example, Factory Relief Engraved and Gold Inlaid Charles
Daly/H. A. Lindner Lightweight Regent Diamond Quality Double Barrel Shotgun
- Serial no. 1983, 12 gauge, 26 1/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened/gold finish,
walnut stock. Built by H. A. Lindner around the turn of the 20th century and retailed by
Schoverling, Daly, & Gales of New York. The gun has blued Excelsior steel barrels featuring
dual white bead sights on the matted concave solid rib which is marked “CHARLES DALY
REGENT DIAMOND QUALITY” in fine gold inlay surrounded by highly attractive floral scroll
engraving which spills off of the rib and blends in to relief engraved fern leaves and scroll
at the breech. The barrels show Lindner’s “HAL/crossed pistols” makers mark ahead of
the flats, period German proof marks, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors.
The barrels are fitted to the casehardened scalloped boxlock action with sideclips and
raised side panels, possibly a 20 gauge frame. The action features stunning shell pattern
carved fences, “CHARLES DALY” banners on either side, and four gold inlaid scenes all
surrounded by lovely intricate scrollwork which flows onto the trigger guard, toplever,
and both tangs. The relief gold inlaid scenes consist of a trio of partridge on the left side, a
flock of mallards on the right side, a crown over a mallard on the underside, and a pair of
woodcocks on the trigger guard. The gun features a third fastener in the standing breech,
double triggers, gold cocking indicators, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold
inlaid “SAFE” indicator. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and fancy fleur-de-lis
checkered splinter forend with engraved iron, a Deeley type release, and a horn tip as
well as a half pistol grip stock with horn inlay, checkered and carved flats with fish scale
borders, “J.W.M” in the gold inscription oval, and a leather covered recoil pad.
Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .716/.717
inches; choke constriction .002/.031 inches; minimum wall thickness .026/.029 inches; 1
11/16 inch drop at comb; 3 inch drop at heel; 13 15/16 inch length of pull; slight cast-off;
weight 5 lbs. 12 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% original blue finish, 95% original case colors with
some muting on the small parts, 99% original gold inlays, and minor handling evidence.
There are small chips at the rear of both sides of the forend; otherwise, the wood is very
fine with a few marks, light wear on the recoil pad, and sharp checkering. The barrels are
slightly off face; otherwise, mechanically excellent. Do not miss out on this chance to own
a truly gorgeous early 20th century shotgun!
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
