Outstanding NFA Exempt Factory Engraved Auguste Francotte .410 Bore
Double Barrel Shotgun/Pistol with Case - Serial no. 23914, 410 cal., 14 inch solid
rib bbl., blue/brushed bright finish, walnut stock, walnut grips. This exceptional little
double barrel shotgun/pistol is listed as exempt from the provisions of the National
Firearms Act in correspondence with the ATF Firearms Technology Branch (FTB), a copy of which is
included, and listed by serial number on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
(ATF) Curio & Relic list. The gun was built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on
the matted concave solid rib, “AUGUSTE FRANCOTTE” and “LIEGE” marked on the right and left tube
respectively, light engraving at the breech, 1960 dated Liege proof marks and 1973 dated London
reproof marks on the flats, 3 inch chambers with automatic ejectors, and chokes constrictions of
.006/.006 inches. The barrels are fitted to the brushed bright finished scaled down boxlock action
with Greener type crossbolt. The action displays lovely acanthus scroll engraving
which continues onto the blued toplever, trigger guard, and lower tang and features
double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety. The gun is fitted with a lightly
figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved blued iron and an
ergonomic pistol grip with flared butt. Included with the gun is a maker’s leather flat
case containing a pair of snap caps and a set of cleaning tools.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 98% original blue and bushed bright
finishes with minor handling evidence, a tiny patch of spotting under the toplever,
and a few marks on the sharply checkered stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
The case is very good. A rare opportunity to own an exceptional NFA exempt double
barrel shotgun/pistol, unlike anything Rock Island Auction Company has
seen before!
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
Estimate: 20,000 - 35,000
