Excellent, Rare and Fresh Ulrich Factory No. 6 Panel Scene
Engraved Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Extra
Lightweight Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Factory Letter -
Serial no. 261031, 25-35 WCF cal., 24 inch lightweight part octagon
bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1905, this is an
attractive example of a documented factory panel scene engraved,
special ordered, deluxe Winchester Model 1894 extra lightweight
takedown rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .25-35 caliber
with a 24 inch half octagon barrel, plain trigger with light pull, half
magazine, Lyman rear cup disc, leaf, and combination front sights,
extra light, takedown, and “$10.00 - #6” engraving when received at
the warehouse on 1 May 1905, and shipped the following day in order
number 4886. The rifle exhibits the beautiful factory No. 6 pattern of
engraving, which is shown on p. 226 of “Winchester Engraving” by R.L.
Wilson. The engraving is unsigned, but was almost certainly executed
by Winchester factory Master Engraver John Ulrich, with an almost
identical bighorn sheep on a Model 1885 rifle signed by him pictured
on p. 178 of the previously mentioned book. According to the research
conducted by Oswalt and Hawk published in “Armax Vol. V” on the
records of the first 353,999 Model 1894s produced, they note that only
336 rifles were factory engraved during that period.
