Highly Attractive Colt
Etched Panel New Line
.38 Spur Trigger Revolver
- Serial no. 6320, 38 RF cal., 2 1/4 inch round
bbl., blue/casehardened finish, rosewood grips.
Manufactured in 1879, this is a very fine example
of Colt’s New Line pocket revolver chambered
in .38 rimfire. These revolvers were intended, in part, to be a pocket sized
version of the full-sized Colt Single Action Army, which was introduced at
the same time, and would have been a popular concealed sidearm in the
rapidly expanding urban environments of the 19th century. The top of the
barrel has the two-line address, while the model and caliber marking is in the acid etched
panel on the left. The matching serial number is marked on the left of the grip frame and
bottom of the barrel, and the matching last three digits are on the rear face of the cylinder.
The left of the frame is marked “38CAL”. It has standard features, long fluted cylinder, no
loading gate, and a pair of smooth rosewood grips.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 75% plus
of the bright, original, high polish blue
finish and 85% plus of the vibrant
original case colors with the
balance a crisp, smooth grey
patina, some scattered light
scratches, and an excellent,
very crisp etched panel. The
grips are also very fine with
some scattered light dings.
Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Charles
Marx Collection.
Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
LOT 3141
Early First Year Production Two Digit
Serial Number 79 Colt House Model
“Cloverleaf” Spur Trigger Revolver -
Serial no. 79, 41 RF cal., 3 inch round bbl., nickel finish, walnut
grips. Manufactured in 1871, the first year of production, this is a
very fine example of one of approximately 7,500 of these distinct,
“cloverleaf” House Model revolvers produced by Colt between
1871 and 1876. These House Model revolvers, along with the Open Top Pocket Model
revolver, were two of the first revolvers produced by Colt which had been designed
from the ground up to use metallic cartridges. This example is marked with the two-
line address on top of the barrel flanked by Maltese crosses. The matching serial
number is marked on the butt, bottom of the barrel, and in ink inside both of the grip
panels. It is fitted with a combination cylinder pin/ejector rod, the high spur hammer,
blade front sight, frame-top groove rear sight, and a pair of smooth walnut grips.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% of the original nickel finish and 40% of the original nitre blue on the
hammer and trigger with some scattered light flaking and some light edge wear showing an attractively
aged brass. The grips are also very fine with a few scattered minor dings and most of the original varnish.
Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection.
Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
LOT 3139
Serial Number 2 Colt “Thuer” Third Model Derringer with Ivory Grips and Highly Desirable “Pipe” Case - Serial
no. 2, 41 RF cal., 2 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/nickel finish, ivory grips. These derringers were introduced in 1870 and
totaled around 48,000 produced. This unique example bears serial number 2, has the “open” style grip frame, and the
gently sloped hammer. These pistols were widely popular in the late 19th and early 20th century as a last ditch concealed
weapon both in the populated urban centers of the East and the dusty saloons of the West. Given their nature as a pocket-
carried pistol, these Colt derringers are rarely found with this much finish remaining. The top of the barrel has the standard
“COLT” marking in italics. The matching serial number is found on the left of the grip frame, the bottom of the barrel, and
handwritten in pencil inside both of the grip panels. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a pair of very
attractive smooth ivory grips. Included with the pistol is a highly desirable, leather wrapped “pipe” style case.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 95% plus of the original blue finish and 95% plus of the original nickel with some light
muzzle and high spot wear. The grips are very fine with some hairline age cracks, attractive aged tone on the right panel,
and otherwise only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with some mild wear overall.
Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500
