Exceptionally Fine Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon Percussion
Revolver Inscribed “S C Hutcheson” - Serial no. 4461, 31 cal., 5
inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish, walnut grips. This Colt
Baby Dragoon was manufactured in 1848 early in production. This model was the first pocket
model revolver manufactured at Colt’s Hartford factory. Colt’s pocket revolvers were his most popular
products and saw widespread use on the western frontier, especially in the gold fields in California.
This exceptional example has the distinctive round cylinder stops, squareback trigger guard,
and barrel without loading lever. The barrel has a German silver cone front sight and is marked
“{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY}”. The left side of the frame is marked “COLTS/PATENT.”
The matching serial number is marked on the cylinder, arbor, barrel, frame, trigger guard,
and back strap. The wedge is not numbered. The butt is neatly inscribed “S C Hutcheson.” The
identity of S. C. Hutcheson is not documented. However, there was a dry goods merchant
named S. C. Hutcheson active in Glasgow, Missouri, in the period.
CONDITION: Fine with 90% plus period refinished blue finish on the barrel, 75% original blue
finish on the cylinder along with a distinct cylinder scene and single safety pin, much of the
early muted original case colors, 80% original silver plating with attractively aged patina. The
inscription on the butt is crisp. The grip is also fine and has mild handling wear, light scratches,
and a tiny flakes at the toe. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection.
