J. H. Wilson High Grade Gilt Presentation Officer’s Saber with Silver Grip and Scabbard - J. H. Wilson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is recorded as a military outfitter and dealer
in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The 35 inch curved blade is decorated with beautiful etching featuring scroll and classical martial trophy motifs and a detailed cavalry
scene on the left side along with a rendition of Justice and “J. H. WILSON/Philadelphia/Pa.” The right side includes “U S” and Columbia. The gilt brass hilt has a bald eagle, shield, and flags
design on the guard, a gorgoneion motif on the back strap, and a knight’s helm pommel. The gilt metal scabbard has scroll, floral, and patriotic motifs and features a blank panel between the
suspension bands for adding an inscription. Includes a sword knot. The consignor indicated they purchased this sword from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and that
it was attributed to General Sherman and had been left to the museum in 1940.
CONDITION: Very fine with minor staining on the otherwise bright blade along with distinct etching, most of the original gilt finish, aged patina on the grip, some wire coming loose, detached
end of the sword knot, and fairly minor overall wear mostly from age and storage.

Stunning Engraved and Gilt Eagle Head Officer’s Saber and Scabbard - This attractive saber has no identifying markings, but swords of this fashion were popular with American
military officers in the early to mid-19th century. The approximately 32 inch curved blade is decorated with scroll, floral, and patriotic U.S. motifs, including America on the left and
spread wing eagles on the right. The gilt brass hilt has a scroll pattern guard and a distinctive eagle head pommel and is fitted with a carved and checkered bone grip. The saber is
accompanied by a beautifully engraved scabbard with scroll and patriotic motifs including additional eagles.
CONDITION: Very fine overall with mostly bright blade with crisp etching, minor staining towards the hilt, most of the original gilt finish, distinct designs throughout, and minor wear.
