The furniture is brass, including a nicely engraved four-piece
patchbox with pierced floral final, foliate scroll engraving, and
release in the upper sideplate towards the heel. The toe plate and
side plate are also engraved. The beautiful curly maple stock has fine
molding, incised carving at the ramrod entry, and relief and incised
carving on the butt along with a shallow cheek rest with a deep
groove on the underside. The incised carving near the barrel tang
has a sliver of wire inlay present. An iron worm is included in
the patchbox.
CONDITION: Very good overall as professionally restored and
reconverted to flintlock with nearly all of the “antiqued” brown
finish remaining on the barrel, mostly mottled gray patina on the
replacement lock, attractively aged patina on the brass furniture,
distinct signature and engraving, some cracks and repairs in the
stock, attractive flame figure, distinct carving, and mild wear. The
patchbox latch is weak but functions. The lock and trigger function.
Overall, a beautiful example of Martin Shell’s beautiful Dauphin rifles.
Provenance: The George Shumway Collection; The Dr. Jay
Hopkins Collection; Mike D’Ambra; The Greg Lampe Collection.
Estimate: 25,000 - 40,000
