Attractive Pair of Engraved John Dickson & Son
13 Bore Percussion Double Barrel Shotguns with
Damascus Barrels, Case, and Accessories -A) John
Dickson & Son Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun
- Serial no. 1174, 13 bore gauge, 32 inch solid rib bbl.,
brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Ordered
in February of 1854, this is an extremely attractive cased
pair of 13 bore percussion shotguns from arguably the
finest bespoke gunmaker Scotland has produced, John Dickson
& Son. This identical and consecutively serialized pair features
beautiful scroll engraving on the locks, trigger guards, breech
plugs, and buttplates. The concave solid ribs are signed
“JOHN DICKSON & SON. 60. PRINCES STREET, EDINBURGH.”
and have brass bead front sights. The casehardened breech
plugs have platinum plugs. The serial numbers are on the
lower tangs, and the buttplates are numbered “1” and “2”
respectively. The casehardened locks are signed “JOHN
DICKSON/& SON” The guns are equipped with double
triggers, and the casehardened trigger plate and ramrod
entry pipe have stylized pineapple finials. The trigger
guards and buttplates are blued. The finely figured walnut
stocks have checkered forends and wrists and a 14 3/8
inch lengths of pull. The included oak takedown case has a
John Dickson & Son trade label inside the lid, leather lined
interior fitted to the gun and includes a full suite of loading
and maintenance equipment.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 80% plus of the brown
finish with strong Damascus twist patterns on the barrels,
75% plus of the case colors, and 40% of the high polish
blue finish on the triggerguard with the balance mostly a grey patina, some scattered
small patches of light oxidation/pitting, and crisp engraving overall. The revarnished wood is also very fine with some scattered minor
dings and mostly well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are fine with some mild handling/storage
evidence. B) John Dickson & Son Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun - Serial no. 1175, 13 bore gauge, 32 inch solid rib bbl., brown/
casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A”.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 80% plus of the brown finish with strong Damascus twist patterns on the barrels, 75% plus of the case
colors, and 50% of the high polish blue finish on the triggerguard with the balance mostly a grey patina, some scattered small patches of
light oxidation/pitting, and crisp engraving overall. The revarnished wood is also very fine with some scattered minor dings and mostly
well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive and desirable consecutive pair of percussion shotguns from one of
Scotland’s most renowned makers!
