Pair of Factory Game Scene Engraved Griffin
& Howe Retailed Arrieta 20 Gauge Hand
Detachable Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns
with Case -A) Arrieta Sidelock Shotgun - Serial
no. 57-03-347-99, 20 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl.,
blue/coin finish, walnut stock. This pair of guns
belonged to H. Norman Schwarzkopf, legendary
American general and commander of the Coalition Forces
during the Gulf War of 1991. Each gun is this pair was built with blued
steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single brass bead sight on the matted flat
solid rib which is marked with a gold inlaid “1” or “2” respectively in a flourish of
scroll engraving, band of engraving at the breech, “GRIFFIN & HOWE - NEW YORK”
marked on the right tube, 1999 dated Spanish proof marks on the flats, and 2 3/4
inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels of each gun are fitted to a coin
finished hand detachable sidelock round body action which displays scroll engraving
surrounding gold inlaid “GRIFFIN & HOWE/NEW YORK” on the underside, a gold “1” or
“2” on the toplever, a trio of quail in flight on the left lockplate, and a pair of flushing
pheasant cocks on the right. The guns feature bushed firing pins, gold centerline
cocking indicators, double triggers, left hand rolled trigger guard, and a tang
mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator. Each gun is fitted with a
richly colored and figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved iron and an
Anson button release marked with a gold “1” or “2” as well as a straight hand stock
with gold inscription oval with the general’s initials “HNS” beneath four stars and a
checkered bare butt. Includes a G&H marked Americase with canvas cover
with “H.N.S.” beneath four stars, four snap caps, and two oilers. Also includes
two letters signed by Cynthia Schwarzkopf, on Schwarzkopf Family letterhead,
certifying both shotguns by their serial numbers as being the former property
of her father, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf. Barrel and stock measurements
(R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured
15.8 mm (.622 inches); choke constriction .009/.015 inches; minimum wall
thickness ..028/.028 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch drop at heel;
15 1/16 inch length of pull; cast-on; weight 6 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue and coin finishes
with minor handling evidence, some light scratches on the wood, and sharp
checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
B) Arrieta Sidelock Shotgun - Serial no. 57-03-348-99, 20 gauge, 28 inch
solid rib bbl., blue/coin finish, walnut stock. As described in “A”. Barrel and stock
measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed
and measured 15.8 mm (.622 inches); choke constriction .006/.014 inches;
minimum wall thickness ..026/.027 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch
drop at heel; 15 1/16 inch length of pull; cast-on; weight 6 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 99% original blue and coin finishes with minor
handling evidence, a patch of spotting on the right barrel near the muzzle, and
some dried grease on the action. The wood is excellent with a few minor marks
and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
