Exceptional Colt First Generation Single Action Army Revolver in Scarce
.38 Long Colt with 7 1/2 Inch Barrel and Heiser Holster - Serial no. 328921, 38
Long Colt cal., 7 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, hard rubber
grips. Manufactured in 1914. Colt only manufactured 1,011 standard frame
Single Action Army revolvers in .38 Long Colt prior to and including the
year 1914, per page 170 of “The 36 Calibers of the Colt Single Action Army”
by David Brown, in which the author states, “Colt Single Actions were first
made in the .38 Colt caliber in 1886. The caliber did not attain sufficient popularity at that time to make
production profitable, and the caliber was dropped in 1914... The comparatively small production in this
caliber makes these guns hard to find, and they are prized by collectors. Specimens in mint condition
are extremely rare. The percentage of 7 1/2” barrels is lower in this group than in most other calibers,
so specimens with 7 1/2” barrels are especially prized.” This high condition example, with a 7 1/2 inch
barrel, is considered extremely hard to find. The caliber was reintroduced in 1922, but again failed to
gain much traction, and by the time it was discontinued again in 1940, only another 1,365 revolvers
had been chambered in it. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top and “38 COLT” on the left
side. The left side of the frame has the two-line patent date markings followed by a Rampant Colt. The left side of
the trigger guard is marked with a Colt factory triangle “VP” proof and a “1”. Matching visible full serial numbers on the frame,
trigger guard, and back strap, with matching handwritten “8921” on the interiors of both grips, unnumbered cylinder, and
assembly number “292” on the loading gate. Includes a tooled leather holster with H.H. Heiser Denver, Colorado,
maker marking on the rear.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish and 90% vivid case colors, with multiple
cylinder drag lines, light holster type wear, freckling on the grip straps, and a brown appearance on the exceptionally fine grips with crisp checkering and designs. Mechanically excellent. Holster is very fine. This excellent Colt First
Generation Single Action Army revolver in scarce .38 Long Colt would make a fine addition to any Colt collection!
