Highly Desirable
Special Order Winchester Deluxe
Model 1894 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Extra Barrel
and “Leg O’ Mutton” Travel Case - Serial no. 962900, 32 W.S. cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1923, this is a highly desirable example of a special ordered, deluxe Winchester Model
1894 rifle with a rare factory extra barrel set and an attractive “leg o’ mutton” travel case retailer marked for Brauer Bros. of St. Louis. These Model
1894s were seldom ordered with extra barrel sets, with Oswalt and Hawk’s data available in “Armax Vol. V” only listing 118 such orders in the serial number range of
1 to 353,999. Additionally, they note that one out of every 10 rifles was a takedown, one out of every 20 rifles had a pistol grip, and one out of every 34 Model 1894s
had checkered wood. There are Winchester oval “WP” proofs on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper left flat of the barrel is marked with the two-line
address and patent dates, the nickel steel marking, and the caliber marking. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The upper tang has the three-
line model and trademark information. The extra .32-40 W.C.F. barrel set has a factory oval “WP” proof on the top flat at the breech, as well as the two line address and
patent dates on the upper left flat. The rifle is fitted with a blued blade front sight, an elevation adjustable No. 24 notch rear sight, and a Lyman combination peep sight
on the upper tang. The extra barrel set is fitted with a reversible beaded blade front sight (bead currently absent from the backward pointed side and a brass bead
on the frontward facing side) and an elevation adjustable notch rear sight. The rifle is mounted with a very finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol
grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and a crescent buttplate. The extra barrel set is fitted with its own nicely figured H-pattern checkered forearm. Includes an
attractive Brauer Bros. marked leather “leg o’ mutton” takedown case that can house the rifle and the extra barrel set.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish on the receiver, refinished takedown collar and top breech of the barrel around the restamped
proof, and the balance mostly a grey patina. Equal amounts of original blue finish remain on the extra barrel set. The wood is also very fine, including the
extra forearm, with some scattered minor dings/scratches and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with some mild wear and scattered
minor handling/storage marks.
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
Estimate: 9,500 - 16,000
