Pair of Scaleby Castle Marked British Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistols
-A) British Long Sea Service Pistol - NSN, 577 cal., 12 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The barrels of both of these
pistols are inscribed “SCALEBY CASTLE” on top at the breech. Scaleby Castle is located in Scaleby
in Cumbria in the north of England and was damaged during the English Civil War. The East India Company ship named
for the castle was launched in 1798 and made 17 voyages for the company and remained in use until c. 1841. The barrels also
have “crown/9” markings and London proof and view marks. The second also has a “crown/B.P” mark. The locks have “crown/V”
and “crown/2” markings and are signed “FEARNLEY.” Robert Fearnley is noted in “Gunmakers of London” by Blackmore as an
ordnance contractor in 1805, and an “A. Fearnley” is also noted as an ordnance contractor in 1815. Belt hooks are on the left, and the other
furniture is brass. The pistols have a “crown/S” marking on the left side of the wrists, and the second pistol
has an “RF” marking on the left flat.
CONDITION: Fine with mostly silver-gray patina, some patches of darker brown patina, and light pitting on the lock and barrel, replacement
belt hook, and attractive aged patina on the brass furniture. The stock is also fine and has nice figure, mild dings and scratches, and minor
edge wear. Mechanically fine.
B) British Long Sea Service Pistol - NSN, 577 cal., 12 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Good with an artificially applied gray and brown patina visible on the lock and barrel, some light pin prick pitting, dark aged
patina on the brass furniture, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has some minor dings and dents, light scratches, and a thin
tension crack at the breech. Mechanically fine.

Two British Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistols
-A) Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 57 cal., 12 1/8 inch
round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The basic Sea Service pattern was used from the mid-
18th century into the early 19th century by the Royal Navy around the globe including during the French & Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, and
Napoleonic Wars. “TOWER” marked at the tail of the lock, St. Edward’s crown above “GR” and “crown/broad arrow” marked at the center of the lock, the left rear of the barrel
is marked with two British proof marks, barrel made without sight provisions, full walnut stock with a brass trigger guard and fittings, a 7 1/2 inch iron belt hook marked with a
crown mounted on to the brass left side plate, a broad arrow above “1805” date stamped on the top right wrist of the stock, and a wooden ramrod with a swollen brass tip.
CONDITION: Fine with bright iron surfaces, some light surface freckling on the barrel and a few small patches of minor pitting, mostly bright patina on the lightly cleaned brass, and sharp markings. The lightly
refinished stock is very good with some light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
B) Pattern 1756/77 Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 57 cal., 12 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. “TOWER” marked at the tail of the lock, St. Edward’s crown above “GR” and “crown/broad arrow”
marked at the center of the lock, the left rear of the barrel is marked with two British proof marks, barrel made without sight provisions, full walnut stock with a brass trigger guard and fittings, a 7 1/2 inch iron belt hook marked with a crown mounted on to the brass left side plate, two opposing broad arrows stamped on top of the stock wrist, and a modern replacement wooden ramrod with a swollen brass tip.
CONDITION: Fine with some light surface freckling on the iron surfaces, mostly bright patina on the brass, and sharp markings. The stock is also fine with numerous scattered dents and scratches, a few small chips, a mild crack on the right below the barrel line, a mild crack in the ramrod channel, and defined stampings. Replacement ramrod has a loose brass tip. Mechanically excellent.
