Pair of Silver Mounted, Engraved and Relief Carved Queen Anne Screw Barrel
Flintlock Pistols by James Freeman -A) James Freeman Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 6 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. This pair of Queen Anne style pistols was manufactured in the early 1700s by James Freeman of London. James Paul Freeman was an active gunmaker circa 1716-1736. The pistols have flourishes of light floral scroll and border engraving throughout and are marked “JAMES FREEMAN” on the lower right along with two London proofs and James Freeman’s “crown/IF” mark. They are marked “LONDON” on top of the breeches and fitted with screw off cannon barrels with multiple wedding bands and wrench lugs on the bottom. The grips have clamshell carvings behind the barrel tang and teardrop flats on either side, and each is mounted with ornate silver escutcheons on top, and silver pommels engraved with naval anchors surrounded by leaves and faint Latin motto “SEMPER/ SPERO MELIORA” (I always hope for better things). CONDITION: Very good with bright iron surfaces showing some scattered patches of minor pitting, bright lightly polished silver, and mostly defined engraving. The refinished grip is also very good with recut carvings, a few small replacement sections and some small chips above the pommel, and a replacement filled in section on the right behind the lock. Mechanically excellent. B) Freeman Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 6 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. As described in “A.” CONDITION: Very good with bright iron surfaces showing some scattered patches of minor pitting, bright lightly polished silver, and mostly defined engraving. The refinished grip is also very good with recut carvings, an incomplete replacement chipped section above the pommel at the rear, and a crack on the right behind the lock. Mechanically excellent. Cased Pair of P. Bond Box Lock Flintlock Pocket Pistols -A) Bond Flintlock Pocket Pistol - NSN, 50 cal., 1 5/8 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut grips. Philip Bond is recorded as active c. 1794-1816 at 45 Cornhill in London. These pocket pistols feature blued barrels with engraved bands at the borders and studs on the bottom for removing the barrels using the barrel wrench included in the case for reloading. The brass frames have “P=Bond/No 45/CORNHILL” on the left sides and “LONDON” on the right sides along with some martial engraving and Tower private proofs at the breech. They are equipped with sliding half-cock safeties that lock the frizzens closed and have walnut butts with silver wrist escutcheons engraved with “AG/to/AC.” The case has a reproduction Edward Bond label inside the lid, oiler, powder flask, and barrel key. CONDITION: Very good with attractive aged patina and distinct inscriptions on the silver, 40% blue remaining on the barrel, aged patina on the brass, legible markings and engraving, and mild overall wear. The butt is also very good and has some dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. The relined case and accessories are also very good and have mild age and storage related wear. B) P. Bond Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 50 cal., 1 5/8 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut grips. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good with attractive aged patina and crisp inscriptions on the silver, mottled gray patina on the barrel, aged patina on the brass, legible markings and designs, and mild wear overall. The grip is also very good and has some light scratches and small dings. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,500

Pair of Engraved Grice Brass Flintlock Boxlock Pistols with Wire Inlaid Grips -A) Grice Boxlock Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 8 1/2 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. This late 18th century pair of Grice boxlock pistols are mostly brass with some iron components, featuring light border engraving on the locks, breech area, and trigger guard, with “Grice/LONDON” inscribed on the left sideplates and an engraved martial motif on the right, fancy silver wire inlays in the walnut grips, and decorated silver wrist escutcheons and pommel caps. Ordnance private proofs stamped on the right of the breech on the “B” gun only. CONDITION: Very good, with lightly polished bright golden patina on the brass with a few areas of darkening at the edges, with a defined maker inscription. The refinished grip is also very good with a few discreet repairs and cracks. Mechanically fine. B) Grice Boxlock Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 8 1/2 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. See “A” description. CONDITION: Very good, with lightly polished bright golden patina on the brass with a few areas of darkening at the edges, with a defined maker inscription. The refinished grip is also very good with a few discreet repairs and cracks, and one small chip at the front right corner. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,750

Pair of Silver Mounted and Engraved “Queen Anne” Flintlock Pistols by Segalas of London -A) Segalas Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. This pair of Queen Anne style pistols was manufactured by Israel Segalas of London. Israel Segalas and his son with the same name are listed as active London gunmakers between circa 1702-1773. The pistols have flourishes of light floral scroll and border engraving throughout and are marked “SEGALAS LONDON” on the lower right along with two London proofs and Israel Segala’s “crown/ IS” mark. They are fitted with screw off cannon barrels with multiple wedding bands and wrench lugs on the bottom. The grips have clamshell silver wire inlays behind the barrel tang and each is mounted with blank silver escutcheons on top and on the left, and silver mask pommels. CONDITION: Very good with scattered light to mild pitting on the iron surfaces and some age darkened patina, and mostly defined engraving and maker markings. The refinished grip is fine with a repaired crack visible on the left, a few light handling marks, and bright silver inlays. Mechanically excellent. B) Segalas Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. See “A” description. CONDITION: Very good with scattered light to mild pitting on the iron surfaces and some age darkened patina, and mostly defined engraving and maker markings. The refinished grip is fine with a cracked section on the left of the wrist, a repaired crack visible on the right of the wrist, a few light handling marks, and bright silver inlays. Mechanically excellent.
