LOT 75
Documented Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Special Order 28 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter - Serial no. 439865B, 38 WCF cal., 28 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The Model 1873 was incredibly popular in the American West due to their rapid firepower and their rugged dependability. That popularity continued well into the 20th century with ranchers, and this example being chambered in .38 W.C.F. would have been the perfect pairing with a Colt Single Action
Army revolver in the same caliber. The included factory letter confirms the 28 inch octagon barrel in .38 caliber and plain
trigger as well as received in the warehouse on November 28, 1892, and shipped the next day. The top barrel flat has the two-line address/
King’s patent marking. The caliber marking is on the upper barrel flat at the breech and repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1873.” The lower tang has the serial number. It is fitted with dovetail blade front and elevation adjustable buckhorn
rear sights. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). CONDITION: Fine, retaining 70% original blue finish with extensive surface oxidation and thinning to brown on the balance. 25% of original nitre blue
remains on the loading gate. The hammer, lever and buttplate are a mix of brown and gray patinas with 30% of original case colors remaining. The wood is excellent showing some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000
LOT 76 Desirable Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Lever Action Carbine - Serial no. 93628, 30-06 cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. “In the Model 95, as with all Winchester models,” wrote legendary Winchester expert and author George Madis, “carbines with special features were rarely ordered” (“The Winchester Book,” page 465). Offered here is one of those rare special order deluxe Model 1895s that are highly sought after by today’s collectors. Moreover, this deluxe carbine is in very fine condition, which only adds to its desirability. Manufactured in 1914, the carbine is fitted with a Marble Sheard beaded blade front sight and a Lyman receiver peep sight. The handguard and barrel lack provisions for a rear sight, which is another special order feature. The receiver has the standard Winchester markings on the left side and lacks provisions for a saddle ring. On special order, the saddle ring was absent. The upper tang has the standard three-line model/trade mark information. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang. The nicely figured deluxe walnut forearm and straight grip stock are checkered. The buttstock is fitted with a trap buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “147.” The assembly number “147” is repeated on the stock inlet. According to George Madis, about 387 Model 1895s featured checkered or carved stocks (see “The Winchester Book,” page 460). Higher grade finishes “will be found less often on the Model 95 than on other models,” continued Madis, “partly due to the fact that it was a higher-power arm intended for the more rugged hunting.” This deluxe carbine certainly makes for a rare Model 1895. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 75% factory quality refinished blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The buttplate has taken on a mottled gray patina. The wood is also very fine with minor dings and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A desirable deluxe Winchester Model 1895 carbine with several special order features that is missing from the most advanced collections. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
