Attractive, Engraved, Documented Single Gun Shipment, Factory Silver Plated Colt Police Positive Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter - Serial no. 298148, 38 Special cal., 4 inch round bbl., silver finish, pearl grips. The included factory letter with this revolver confirms the current configuration including the silver finish and pearl grips, as well as being a single gun shipment to Bluefield Hardware Co./Guyant Hardware & Supplies in Bluefield, West Virginia, on 19 April 1924. While the factory letter has no mention of the engraving, the writer believes the engraving to be factory and the work of Colt Master Engraver Wilbur Glahn who began working at Colt in 1919. Very similar examples showing Glahn’s deeply cut scrollwork can be found on p. 405-411 of “Colt Engraving” by R.L. Wilson. The revolver shows deeply cut floral scroll and border engraving over about half of the surfaces and is factory silver plated overall. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, while the model and caliber marking are on the left. The left side of the frame is marked with the Rampant Colt, and the left of the trigger guard has a “VP” proof and “3”. It is fitted with blade front and frame top groove rear sights, as well as a pair of smooth, factory pearl grips with Colt medallions at the tops. CONDITION: Fine, retains 75% of the attractively aged original silver finish with the balance having flaked to show a mixture of smooth grey patina and bright under plating and a few scattered patches of very light surface pitting. The grips are excellent with a few scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 5,000 - 7,500
