Period Engraved Colt Model 1855 Pattern Percussion Revolving Shotgun - Serial no. 11745, 18 gauge,
26 1/2 inch part octagon bbl., blue/nickel finish,
walnut stock. This interesting shotgun was custom
built during the period using an original Colt
Model 1855 revolving long gun. It has the earlier style frame and a five-shot fluted cylinder. The cylinder
chambers and smoothbore barrel measure around .63-.64 caliber (around 18 bore). There are two “C” markings on the back of the cylinder, and the cylinder pin is marked “11745.” The shotgun otherwise
has no visible identifying markings. The smoothbore barrel has a bead front sight that extends slightly into the bore and scroll and wavy line and dot patterns engraved on the octagonal breech
section. The underside of the barrel has a slot from a prior tenon. The top strap has a flat top
and narrow sight groove. The cylinder is nickel plated. The hammer and frame have scroll and
floral engraving. There is also a dog engraved on the nickel silver trigger guard and the upper tang. The 17 inch long
forearm has a pewter forend cap and is secured by two barrel bands. The pistol grip buttstock has a broad checkering on the wrist, a nickel silver star inlay with a brass tack at the center on the bottom of the grip, and a steel crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Good as period upgraded to current configuration with mostly gray and brown patina on the barrel and frame, strong blue finish on the hammer and barrel bands, 90% plus nickel plating on the cylinder, aged patina on the trigger guard, mostly crisp engraving, and general mild overall wear. The replacement wood is very good and has distinct checkering, smooth finish, minor dings and scratches, a few small cracks, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine.
