Exceptional Cased London Agency Colt Model 1860 Army Percussion
Revolver with Matching Shoulder Stock - Serial no. 156355, 44 cal., 8 inch round
bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut grips. The Colt Model 1860 Army was the culmination of a series of improvements on Samuel Colt’s original percussion revolver designs and was one of the key revolvers of
the American Civil War and the Old West. It combined the .44 caliber stopping power of Colt’s large “horse pistols” with the more compact size of the popular Colt Model 1851 Navy or “belt pistol” which could be more comfortably carried in a holster on the hip and also had an improved loading lever design. With an attachable shoulder stock, you could turn the revolver into a handy carbine for steadier aim, but these shoulder stocks, especially stocks matching numbered to the revolver, are hard to find. After the Civil War, many of these revolvers remained in use on the frontier even as metallic cartridge revolvers became more common in the 1870s. The company also continued to ship them overseas, including to the Colt London Agency.
