Bergmann MP18 Submachine Gun, Class III/NFA
C&R Fully Transferable Machine Gun - Serial no. 5296A,
9 mm cal., 8 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood stock. Originally developed near the end of
World War I, Bergmann’s MP18 was among the earliest submachine gun designs, and one of the
first to fully settle the overall mission and pattern for the weapon; a compact, maneuverable weapon
optimized for rough combat at “knife fighting” range. The MP18 was widely studied and dissected by the nations of the world, with
many (licensed or contraband) imitators. Blade front and tangent rear sight graduated to “10”, with an integral full length ventilated heat
shield around the barrel, “BREVET BERGMANN” on top of the magazine well, which has the later pattern 90 degree angle, and matching serial numbers
on multiple parts. Operation is open bolt, configured for full auto only operation. The pistol grip stock is smooth hardwood construction, with grasping grooves
on the forearm and a smooth steel buttplate.
CONDITION: Very good, with most of the dull refinished blue finish, showing some light wear and handling marks overall, some rust on the underside of the heat shield and around the triggerguard screws, and some areas of covered pitting. The receiver has been subject to “reactivation”, with a welded cut through the receiver just behind the magazine well. The magazine is of unknown origin, and has been modified to fit the magazine well. The stock is good, with mended cracks in the wrist, a pin reinforcement at the receiver hinge, and a number of scuffs and dents. Mechanically very good. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios or Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479.
Estimate: 7,500 - 12,000
  LOT 1498
Lanchester Mark I* Submachine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable
Machine Gun with Extra Stock - Serial no. 24036A-s.s., 9 mm cal., 8 inch round bbl.,
blue finish, hardwood stock. Designed by George Lanchester and manufactured by
Sterling Engineering of Essex, the Lanchester Mark I* submachine gun was a close descendant of the German MP28/II; the need for quality combat gear was rather pressing for Britain at this time, and an attitude of “if it works, it works” carried the day with the Mark I*. Big changes include the elimination of select fire operation in favor of a simpler full auto only action (the critical change that distinguishes the MkI* from the MkI), the integration of a closed bolt safety (absent from this example), and a permanent bayonet lug for a SMLE knife bayonet. Chiefly used by the Royal Navy, the Mark I and Mark I* provided strong close-in firepower. Blade front and two-leaf rear sights, with the tubular receiver doubling as a ventilated barrel shroud, with the top of the brass magazine well marked “LANCHESTER/Mk.I*/SA. M619/24036 A-s.s.” on top and “S&S ARMS CO” on the underside. Fitted with a SMLE pattern hardwood stock with a brass
buttplate. With extra stock.
CONDITION: Very good, with 40% of the thin arsenal blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and mild handling marks. The brass shows a well aged patina, and the
refinished stock is good with some light cracking near the hinge with numerous scattered scuffs and dents overall.
Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which
is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios or Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11.
These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479. Estimate: 8,500 - 13,000
