C. Smith Crown Grade Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 219324, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This scarce Crown Grade is one of
only 842 made by Hunter Arms Co. according to page 96 of William Brophy’s “L. C. Smith Shotguns”. Blued steel barrels with single brass bead sight on the matted concave solid rib with engraving and a gold inlaid bar toward the breech, “L. C. SMITH Crown GRADE” and “MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS CO. INC. FULTON. N.Y.” marked on the right and left barrels respectively, 1 1/2 inch wedges of scroll engraving at either breech, and chambers measured 2 3/4 inches with automatic ejectors. The casehardened sidelock action displays the exceptional factory cut engraving these high grade L. C. Smith guns are known for. The left side shows a pair of setters on point in a field, and the right has a pair of pointers following the scent of game with the balance filled with attractive floral scrollwork and the tell-tale gold inlaid crown on the toplever. The gun features a Hunter One Trigger and tang mounted manual safety switch with a small gold inlaid “S”. The beautifully figured, multi- point checkered splinter forend with ebony tip inlay and engraved fittings and round knob pistol grip stock featuring a leather covered recoil pad. Barrel and stock measurements(R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .730/.732 inches; choke constriction .034/.036 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.031 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 13 3/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 9 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 99% reapplied blue finish on the barrels, 20% original case colors on the action, 60% original blue on triggerguard, some tiny subsurface pitting in areas on the barrel, and overall minor handling evidence. There are tiny hairline cracks at the rear of each lockplate and the upper tang; otherwise, the wood is very fine with a few minor scratches and sharp recut checkering. Mechanically excellent. Upgraded L.C. Smith/Hunter Arms Co. 16 Gauge Field Grade Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. FW187709, 16 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1940 and subsequently upgraded to its current configuration. Blued steel barrels with dual white bead sights on the matted solid rib, wedges of oak leaf scroll at the muzzles and breeches, 2 1/2 inch chambers with a single extractor, and choke constrictions of .018/.035 inches. The action has been brushed bright and decorated with extensive Germanic oak leaf scroll engraving over a matted background surrounding a pair of pheasants on the left and a trio of mallards in flight on the right. The gun features double triggers
and a tang mounted manual safety switch. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered beavertail forend with engraved shoe and a pistol grip stock with a carved smooth grip cap and a rubber recoil pad. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 5/16 inch drop at heel; 14 5/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 99% blue finish, brushed bright finish on the action, minor handling evidence, a few small dings in the wood, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
