Very Attractive Relief Carved Alligator Cane with Silver Band - During the 19th and 20th centuries, canes reached their pinnacle of popularity, becoming
a must have accessory for those wishing to publicly proclaim their social and economic status. Canes were particularly popular among the affluent of western Europe and North American. This piece specifically would have looked particularly at home in the hands
of a gentleman of the southern U.S., particularly the bayous of Louisiana or the swamps of Florida given its theme. The L-shaped antique ivory grip of this example has been expertly relief carved in the form of a detailed juvenile alligator. The grip is joined to the shaft with wide silver band with floral motifs marked “STERLING”. The slender shaft is knobbed and tipped with German silver and iron. It measures 34 3/4 inches overall. CONDITION: Fine, the grip showing an attractive, lightly aged tone, a minor chip absent from the nose of the alligator, and a few hairline age cracks. The silver shows an attractively aged patina. The shaft is also fine with minimal handling evidence and some mild
patina on the tip. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
They were more than just a mobility tool, but rather an accessory with which one could publicly project their economic and social status. Popular motifs for canes evolved through the centuries; however, the Victorian era specifically saw a resurgence in interest in classical Greco-Roman culture and art, leading to many canes from the era featuring Greco- Roman or classical mythological themes like this example. The antique ivory grip of this cane has been masterfully carved in the form of a human skull wearing a classical crown of laurel leaves. Laurel wreaths/crowns are often view as a symbol of victory or triumph, leading the writer to believe this cane is meant to symbolize triumph or victory at great cost. The grip is joined to the shaft by a band of woven silver wire. The smooth shaft is of Malacca and tipped with dark horn. It measures 33
7/8 inches overall. CONDITION: Fine, the grip showing an attractively aged tone overall with
a few scattered hairline age cracks and nicks
on the nose. The silver shows an attractive aged patina. The shaft is very good with some scattered mild flaking of the varnish and some hairline cracks near the tip.
Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500

Head Cane with Silver Band - Starting in the 16th century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th centuries having worked their way down to the middle classes as a symbol of status. Being most popular among the upper echelons of society, popular motifs for canes often featured prized and valuable horses or hunting dogs, such as this example. The slightly “L” shaped, antique staghorn handle is masterfully relief carved in the shape of a snarling hound’s head with glass eyes. The handle is joined to the shaft with a wide silver band with floral motifs and two
small hallmarks (one for sterling). The varnished hardwood shaft is smooth and is tipped with antique ivory. It measures 36 3/8 inches overall.
