Highly Attractive Exceptional Special Order Winchester Deluxe
Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen .22 Short Takedown Rifle with
Factory Letter - Serial no. 113281, 22 short cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. The accompanying factory letter for this high condition, highly
attractive deluxe Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen takedown rifle states only that the
serial number was applied on January 22, 1913. No other information is provided. These rifles were
incredibly popular among early 20th century competition shooters, and takedown deluxe examples
like this one are highly sought after by today’s collectors. Winchester expert and author George Madis noted that “the
combination of a high wall receiver and caliber 22 are not usually seen” (“The Winchester Book,” page 264). The rifle is fitted with a windage adjustable globe front sight, scope blocks, and tang peep sight with a staff graduated from 0-75. The rifle is in takedown configuration, and the action is equipped with
crisp checkering on the balance. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 7,500 - 12,000

Documented Antique Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 High Wall
Schuetzen Rifle with Scope and Factory Letter - Serial no. 25378, 32-40 cal., 30 inch part
octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The accompanying factory letter states that
this deluxe Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen rifle was received in the warehouse on June 23, 1888,
and shipped the same day with a no. 3 half octagon 30 inch barrel in .32-40 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol
grip stock, mid-range Vernier and windgauge sights, Swiss buttplate, and cheekpiece. The front and rear sights have been
removed and filler blocks for each dovetail installed. A dovetail mounted scope base has been subsequently custom added,
and it carries a Winchester A5 scope. The top barrel flat is stamped “32-40” at the breech. The receiver is casehardened. The checkered forearm and pistol grip
      double set triggers. The no. 3 octagon barrel is stamped with the two-line Winchester address/patent dates legend and “22 SHORT” on the upper left flat. The Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver. Note the Winchester proof on the barrel is stamped to accommodate the rear scope block as it is stamped ahead of the block. The forearm and pistol grip stock are
checkered and are of nicely figured X deluxe walnut. The forearm has an ebony tip insert, and the pistol grip has a Winchester hard rubber grip cap. The buttstock has a right handed cheekpiece and a Schuetzen type buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “1099 US X.” The buttplate is stamped with the matching assembly number “1099” as well as with the number “20600.”
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish and the takedown collar and receiver retain 90% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The buttplate has an attractive plum appearance. 60% original case colors remain on the hammer, breech block, and lever. The wood is very fine with noticeable horizontal scuffing on right side, minor handling marks and overall
stock are nicely figured XX deluxe walnut. The forearm and pistol grip have an ebony insert. The buttstock has a right handed cheekpiece and a brass Swiss buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “1921 XX CSB.” The assembly number “1921” is repeated on the stock inlet. The buttplate has been renumbered “1921” with the second “1” stamped above “0.” Both buttplate screws
have the matching last two digits of the assembly number (“21”).
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% plus thinned original blue finish with some light spotting. The frame retains 85% plus vivid original case colors with the tangs fading to gray. 30%
original case colors remain on the lever. There is a filled crack on the right side of the refinished buttstock; otherwise, the wood is very fine with some minor handing marks and overall crisp checkering. The buttplate has a highly attractive dark aged appearance. The scope has hazy optics. Mechanically excellent. A high condition deluxe Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen rifle that will make a great addition to any
Winchester or single shot collection.
