 LOT 542
Framed Winchester “Shoot Them and Avoid Trouble” Advertising Print - Originally released in 1908, the advertising print has a visible area about 31 inches wide and 25 inches tall, with a green border painted in a wood grain pattern surrounding a scene
of two somewhat
stereotypical African-
American men and a
dog caught off guard
when an animal flushed
out of a downed tree
trunk turns out to be a skunk. The border is marked “WINCHESTER LOADED SHOTGUN CARTRIDGES” at the top, red “W” trademarks on the sides, and the text “SHOOT THEM AND AVOID TROUBLE” along the bottom. The vague phrasing of “them” reportedly created confusion and concern, resulting in many of these prints being recalled and reissued with the border removed, and in the end the majority would be discarded or recycled. Mounted in a glass-fronted frame, 37 inches wide and 31 3/4 tall, with blue matting and textured wood board backing. CONDITION: Very good, with minor wear and tear concentrated on the edges. The sides of the print have been trimmed to fit the frame, with about half of the “W” lost on each side. The frame is in good order. This is an incredibly rare and fine piece of Winchester advertising history.
