Factory Engraved Boss & Co. Backaction Sidelock Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 4003, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut
stock. Manufactured in 1888 per page 236 of Donald Dallas’“Boss & Co.: Builder of Best Guns Only”. Built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the matted flat solid rib, “BOSS & Co 73 St. JAMES’S STREET.
LONDON” on the right tube and “SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH’S FLUID PRESSED STEEL” on the left, a band of engraving at the breech, and chambers measured 2 1/2 inches with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to a casehardened backaction sidelock action which displays attractive scroll engraving surrounding
“BOSS & Co.” banners on either lockplate and continuing onto the toplever, triggerguard, and both tangs. The gun features a pair of triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE”. The gun is mounted with a highly attractive and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and a round knob pistol grip stock with silver inscription oval marked “TFVN” and a checkered hard rubber buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at “13/1” (.719 inches) and measured at .728 inches; choke constriction .006/.007 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.030 inches; 1 5/8 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 13 7/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% reapplied blue finish, strong traces of original case colors with the balance a fine silver, light handling evidence, and some thinning and spotting on the barrels. There is a small chip at the lower left stock horn, otherwise the wood is very good with dings, scratches, and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

A) Charles Hellis &
Sons Shotgun - Serial no. 3527, 12 gauge, 28

walnut stock. This pair
was manufactured
between 1925 and 1928 according to the information given on page 114 of Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume One: London”. Both guns were built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “CHARLES HELLIS &
ONS. 119 EDGWARE ROAD. HYDE PARK. LONDON. W.” and a gold “1” or “2” surrounded by scroll engraving, a band of engraving at the breech, nd 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are mated to casehardened boxlock actions with recessed sideplate displaying xtensive near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding “C. HELLIS & SONS.” signatures on either side before continuing onto the triggerguard, tangs, and toplever which shows a gold 1” or “2”. Both guns feature double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Both guns are fitted with an attractively figured and multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings and a “1” or “2”
on the Anson button release along with a straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, “R.P.L.” in the silver inscription oval, and a checkered bare butt. Included is a wood and leather takedown case that houses the set. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at “13/1” (.719 inches) and measured .738/.737 inches; choke constriction .006/.040 inches; minimum wall thickness .036/.035 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 7 oz.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 95% original blue finish, 25% plus original case colors with the balance a fine grey, light handling evidence, a few light dings and scratches in the wood, slight stress crack at the upper tang, and well-defined checkering on the stock and forend. The case is good. Mechanically excellent.
B) Charles Hellis & Sons Shotgun - Serial no. 3528, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. As described in “A”. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at “13/1” (.719 inches) and measured .736/.737 inches; choke constriction .004/.039 inches; minimum wall thickness .037/.035 inches; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 5/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 7 oz.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 95% original blue, 60% plus original case colors with the balance grey, mild handling evidence, a few pressure marks in the wood, a stress crack off the upper tang, and well-defined checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. A great opportunity to
own a pair of fine British sporting guns!
