Fine Cased Pair of Engraved Gold Banded Maclauchlan
Percussion Travelers Pistols
-A) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 inch round
bbl., brown/blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This is a
very fine matched pair of English travelers pistols. The top of
the breechblock has a wedge of floral scroll engraving and
the top of the barrel is marked “EDINBURGH” with floral scroll
engraving ahead of the marking. There is a gold inlaid band
on the breech plug, the barrel tang is engraved with a leaf
design and the lock is marked “Maclauchlan”. There is simple
floral scroll engraving on the back action lock, hammer, and
trigger guard. Iron swivel mounted ramrod with button head, brown Damascus barrel with blue trigger guard and casehardened lock and hammer, fish motif hammer, bead and fixed notch sights. Mounted with a full walnut stock with checkered grip, horn forend, and cap compartment on the butt with floral engraved lid and silver thumb plate marked with a motto “VIRTUS SUB PONDERE CRESCIT” on a ribbon over a fish, and the initials “I.M.” This is the motto and part of the coat of arms of the Irish McCann family, and the pair was likely owned by a member of the large family. Members of the McCann family were notable figures in the Old Northwest in the 19th century, including in the early Wisconsin lumber industry. Complete in a wooden case with a
brass inscription disk on the lid with the same inscription as the thumb plate, hunter green velvet lining with pressed decorative
border design on the inside of the lid and attached label with a man and hunting dogs, and reading “MACLAUCHLAN/Gun
Maker/24/SOUTH FREDERICK STREET/EDINBURGH/Powder and Shot with Shooting Tackle/of every description”. The case has six
compartments with two having lids with pulls and contains a small flask, Eley cap tin, nipple wrench with ebony handle, and wooden ramrod.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 85% of the original brown finish and all of the Damascus pattern remains. The hammer retains 70% original bright case colors with a smooth brown patina on the balance. All of the gold inlay remains. The lock shows 60% original case colors in protected areas around the hammer. There is scattered bright original blue finish on the trigger guard and ramrod pipe mixed with smooth brown patina. The stock is fine with a number of minor dents and scratches especially on the left flat, a stress crack at the lock plate screw, and crisp checkering. Clear markings and engraving. The hammer does not hold at the half cock position, otherwise action is fine. The case is good with an old minor crack in the lid, scattered minor dings and scratches, some minor contact wear on the lining, and some heavy wear from the hammer of the top gun. The accessories are all fine.
B) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 inch round bbl., brown/blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Described in “A”.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 80% of the original thin brown finish and Damascus pattern with some scattered minor spotting. The breech plug, ramrod pipe, and trigger guard show strong traces of original bright blue finish with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. The lock shows 50% original case colors. All of the gold inlay remains. The stock is fine with a number of minor dents and scratches especially on the left flat and crisp checkering. Clear markings and engraving. Mechanically excellent.

Documented “Andria Varara” Marked Highland Basket Hilted Broadsword Attributed to “The King of Pipers”, Donald Cameron with Scabbard and Framed Newspaper Clipping - Manufactured c. the late 18th or early 19th century, this sword is attributed as belonging to Donald Cameron (c. 1821-1868), known as “The King of Pipers”. By the 1850s, Cameron had won nearly every major bag piping competition that existed in Scotland, and in 1867 was the first winner of a “Champion of Champions” competition held in Inverness, leading to his being referred to as king of pipers. In the included newspaper clipping about Cameron and this sword, it is stated that he won this sword for placing second at the triennial piping competition in Edinburgh in 1838, at the age of 17. The double edged blade measures 32 1/8 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide at the ricassos, with two deep fullers running most of the length. The blade is marked “xxx ANDRIA xxx/xxx VARARA xxx” in the fullers on both sides. The guard is of the typical “advanced” 1828 Highland Pattern pierced with mostly hearts and the pommel is a fluted dome with a finial pierced for a tassel. The grip is wire wrapped shagreen and there is a red and white felted knuckle guard inside the basket. Includes an iron scabbard with two hanging rings, ball finial drag, and a German silver band at the throat. The previously mentioned included newspaper clipping is matted in a black finished frame. showing mostly a bright grey patina with some scattered small patches of light pitting, a few minor dings in the edges, and crisp markings. The remainder of the iron shows a grey patina and scattered light pitting. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,500

John Christie Scottish Flintlock Belt Pistol - NSN, 54 cal., 7 3/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, metal stock. John Christie of Stirling and Doune was a gunmaker in the 1750s-1760s and also worked in partnership with other local gunsmiths. The pistol has a two-part, multi-stage barrel with
a flared muzzle section and a notch for a rear sigh. The lock is signed “Io/ CHRISTIE” and has some scroll engraving. The remainder of the pistol is plain. A belt hook is fitted to the left side. The metal stock has
a rounded pommel.
CONDITION: Good with mostly bright cleaned metal surfaces, some
mild pitting, a few cracks and braised repairs, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine.
