Scarce Costa Rican Contract DWM Model 1910 Maxim Heavy Machine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable Machine
Gun - Serial no. 5623, 7 mm cal., 28 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood grips. Manufactured in Germany on contract for Costa Rica. Most famous for no longer existing, the Costa Rican Army had
approximately 65 machine guns in various flavors at the time of its abolition in 1948; few Costa Rican Maxims ever existed, and far fewer have been seen registered in the United States. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with a short recoil booster muzzle device on the smooth steel water jacket, a “butterfly” trigger with thumb safety, and a pair of hardwood grips with integral oilers. Multiple components are “DWM” marked, with the tension mechanism marked “BERLIN/1910” and the top cover bearing the coat of arms of Costa Rica over “Mod. 1910”. Included with the lot is a folding tripod with a brass Berlin data plate on the back leg. CONDITION: Fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina, scattered spotting, and light handing marks. The grips are cracked and chipped, and the tripod is in good order. The bolt assembly is numbered “5629/A”, with other visible numbers matching. Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon
is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios or Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479. Estimate: 12,000 - 18,000 LOT 3467 German Schmeisser MP28.II, Class III/NFA DEWAT C&R Submachine Gun - Serial no. 11052, 9 cal., 8 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood stock. A refinement of the World War One era MP18 SMG, the MP28.II was part of the last generation of “heavy metal” SMGs, prior to the transition to the MP38/MP40 models for the Germans. Blade front and tangent rear sight, with a ventilated receiver that doubles as a heat shield for the barrel and a magazine well marked “M.P.28.II/SYSTEM/ SCHMEISSER/PATENT”. The underside of the receiver bears the serial number. A manual hook safety is integrated into the receiver, with a “D” and “E” marked pushbutton selector switch built into the trigger guard. Fitted with a smooth pistol grip stock with grasping grooves on the forearm and a ribbed steel buttplate. Includes a brown leather sling and some spare parts. The deactivation was performed by installing a metal plug in the breech and grinding down the tip of the firing pin; the bolt moves freely and has an unobstructed firing pin hole, and the trigger mechanism is fully functional.
CONDITION: Fine as deactivated, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, spotting and handling marks. A section of the heat shied on the left side is absent, with areas of metal torn or cut in a roughly triangular pattern; while no accounting of the history of the weapon was provided, this signs are suggestive of a bullet or fragment strike that was later cleaned up by cutting away the most jagged sections of the metal. A retention screw is absent from the barrel, and some parts (including the bolt) are mixed numbered replacements. The stock is good, with a number of scuffs and dents. The extractor occasionally shifts out of position and binds up against the ejector port, otherwise mechanically excellent. NOTE: This is a registered DEWAT weapon with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), as a National Firearms Act (NFA) weapon, that is fully transferable. It has been classified as a Curio or Relic as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479, National Firearms Act.
