one of the most powerful cartridges ever developed for a lever action rifle. Introduced in 1904,
the powerful .405 cartridge was capable of taking most African game. Former president Theodore Roosevelt used a Winchester Model 1895 Express rifle extensively on his famous African safari and pronounced: “the Winchester .405 is, at least for me personally, the Medicine Gun for lions”. The
rifle has a 24 inch round barrel with Express style front sight with gold bead and Lyman two-leaf, folding Express rear sight. One leaf has a large “v” notch and the second leaf has a flat top with white triangle. A Lyman “WR-WT” receiver sight with locking lever is mounted on the left side of
the receiver. The top of the receiver is matted. Winchester swivel eyes for detachable sling swivels are mounted on the underside of the stock and barrel. The rifle has a full blue finish with color case hardened hammer. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The forearm has a an ebony inlay on the tip and the stock has a shotgun style buttplate. The black hard rubber buttplate is checkered and has the Winchester logo in a circle in the center. The left side of the barrel is roll stamped “-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER” between the rear sight and the receiver. The barrel marking is followed by the caliber designation “405 WCF” just ahead of the receiver. The oval Winchester “W/P” proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel and on the top of the receiver to the left of the matting. The Winchester two-line legend and patent markings are roll stamped on the left side of the receiver beneath the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll stamped “MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE REG. IN U.S.PAT.OFF.”. The serial number is stamped across the lower receiver tang behind the trigger.
CONDITION: Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% of the bright original blue finish overall. The sides
of the magazine have only faint cycling marks indicating that the rifle has seen only limited and careful handling. The barrel and receiver marking are also excellent. The stock and forearm are in
the same excellent plus condition and show only very limited handling and storage wear. The is an exceptional example of the very desirable Winchester Model 1895 rifle in .405.
