Exceptional Documented Antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Rifle in Highly Desirable 50 Express Caliber with Factory Letter - Serial no. 72315, 50 express cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The accompanying factory letter states the rifle was received in the warehouse on August 18, 1896 and shipped the next day with a no. 3 30 inch octagon barrel in .50 Express caliber, plain trigger, no slots for sights, and shotgun buttplate. The rifle is fitted with a non-factory added dove tail blade front sight (bead absent) and non-factory added corresponding three folding leaf rear sight on a no. 3 barrel with the two-line
Winchester address ahead of the rear sight and “50 EX” at the breech. The lower tang has the patent date
and serial number. Mounted with a smooth Schnabel forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted
with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The exact number of 1885s made in .50 Express caliber is unknown, but the
number is believed to be somewhere around only 300. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The receiver retains 70% original case colors. The buttplate retains 50% plus original blue finish. The wood is excellent with some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 7,500 - 12,000
“H” pattern checkering. The forearm has an ebony tip insert and a palm rest. The buttstock has a hard rubber Winchester grip cap, right handed cheekpiece, and nickel plated Schuetzen buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “7985 XXX SBC.” The assembly number “7985” is repeated on the butt of the stock and back of the buttplate. The custom period hardwood
partitioned case contains, and reloading tools/supplies.
CONDITION: Very fine. The H.M. Pope marked barrel retains 80% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The receiver retains 90% plus
original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The scope retains 50% faded original blue finish and has hazy optics. 30% faded original case colors remain on the lever. The buttplate retains 90% original nickel plating. The wood is also very fine with some scattered minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

H.M. Pope Marked Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle with Scope and Case - Serial no. 83890, 32-40 cal.,
30 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1889 by Winchester and subsequently received a H.M. Pope barrel. The no. 4 barrel features provisions for a false muzzle (bullet starter included), a Stevens scope, and a windage adjustable globe front sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the H.M Pope marking which is covered over by the front
scope block. The front scope block also covers a third drilled and tapped hole. The receiver is
fitted with a single set trigger. The upper tang is fitted with a sight base. The serial number and Winchester patent dare
marking are stamped on the lower tang. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe walnut and feature Winchester factory
