Stunning Documented Special Order Straight Grip Deluxe Open Top Winchester “Centennial” Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 4923, 45-75 cal., 28 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, deluxe walnut stock. The Model 1876 was only manufactured in 1876-1897, and production was limited to just
63,871 rifles. These were sought after by
serious big game hunters, including Theodore Roosevelt,
as the recognized the increased firepower and the ability for fast follow-up shots could be vital. It earned the nickname the “Centennial Model” as it was debuted during the one hundredth year of American Independence and in time for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The included factory letters lists this
rifle with a half-octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered stock, 1/2 magazine, and casehardened finish. It is noted as received in the warehouse on September 21, 1878, and shipped that same day in order 13151 and also lists a repair date of May 8, 1886, in
order 6292. This rifle is well into the “Second Model” range but remains an “Open Top” without any provisions dust cover. After approximately serial number 1,600, dust covers were an option, but they do not appear to have become common until after serial number 3,000.
CONDITION: Extremely fine as professionally restored with 99% plus of the factory quality blue and fiery case colors remaining, varnish over the case colors, the slightest signs of wear in a few spots under the finish on the metal and wood, a small chip at the upper right corner of the wrist, very few faint handling and storage marks, and generally an essentially factory new appearance overall. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 8,000 - 14,000
