LOT 501
Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 29 .44 Magnum Double Action Revolver with Case and Factory Letter - Serial no. S166243, 44 Magnum cal., 6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, goncalo alves grips. Manufactured in 1956-1957. The included factory letter lists
this revolver as having a 6 1/2 inch barrel with blue finish and Goncalo Alves target grips when shipped to Graves Humphrey Co. in Roanoke, Virginia on November 2, 1961.
The letter notes further that the
revolver was shipped late for its
serial number. The included correspondence from S&W historian
Roy Jinks states that this revolver was shipped so late because it
was on an advertising account to an unknown party. Includes a
S&W monogram case and cleaning tools. The most recent research
shows this revolver, as documented by the S&W Historical
Foundation, to be the latest known shipped (1961) five-screw
.44 Magnum.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 97% plus original blue finish with some light handling marks, leading edge wear, a light cylinder drag line, and crisp grip checkering. Mechanically excellent. Case is very fine.

LOT 502
Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 29 .44 Magnum
Double Action Revolver with Case and
Factory Letter - Serial no. S166813, 44
Magnum cal., 4 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish,
rosewood grips. Manufactured in 1956-1957.
The included factory letter states this revolver
has no shipping date, and is thus “technically
stolen”. Roy Jinks clarifies this term in a follow
up letter stating that it is the term used by
Smith & Wesson for revolvers which may
have been a clerical error or misplaced and
not reported stolen. To further add to the
interesting nature of this revolver, the left side
of the grip frame has not one, but two, factory
return dates (1159 and 776). The revolver is fitted with red
blade front and adjustable rear sights. Matching serial numbers
stamped on the butt, cylinder, and barrel. Includes a S&W
display case.
CONDITION: Very fine as factory refinished, retaining 97% with
some light handling marks, some muzzle wear, and a light
cylinder drag line. Grips are very fine with some minor dings
and scratches and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
