LOT 3227 Massive Taylor Marked Brass Barrel Doglock Blunderbuss - NSN, 1 3/4 Inch gauge, 28 1/2 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The bore of this large blunderbuss from the late 17th century measures 1 3/4 inches at the muzzle and has only light flare from around 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inches for the main bore. Given the large size, it may have been meant to be fitted as a swivel gun. The barrel is marked with a “*/GT” marking at the breech along with London proof and view marks. The breech ring has a sighting notch. The furniture is brass. The wrist escutcheon is engraved with a profile of a man. Other components have
floral engraving. The lock is signed “TAYLOR” and has floral engraving, a bird head shaped dog catch, horizontally acting sear, tumbler with
half and full-cock positions, and a heart stamped on the inside of the lockplate. The stock has the distinctive early style rounded heel and nail fitted buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine with a coat of varnish over the metal giving it a dark brown coloration and aged patina on the brass. The engraving and markings are mostly distinct. There is some mild pitting on the lock. The refinished stock is very good and has a repair visible through the wrist and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.

Fine Engraved Theophilus Richards Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss - NSN, 10 gauge, 19 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured by Theophilus Richards (1747-1828). “The Concise History of Birmingham” from 1808 noted, “The shop of Theophilus Richards, in the High Street, is the toyshop of Birmingham; for the elegance of its appearance and the multiplicity of its valuable articles it is scarcely rivalled,” and the shop was known for its silver goods. proofs on the upper left and flares at the muzzle. The rounded lock has floral engraving on the plate and cock, with “T/RICHARDS” marked at the center of the plate. The iron breech plug tang is floral engraved and has a sighting groove. The remaining furniture is brass with light engraving including a blank thumb plate and a floral finial on the trigger guard. The near full-length stock is mostly smooth with relief cut shell-shaped molding around the breech plug tang, and the ramrod is tipped with brass. The bore is estimated at 10 gauge and flares to approximately 1 1/2 inches at the muzzle. CONDITION: Fine, the barrel and other brass components mostly bright with an attractive lightly aged patina and a mostly smooth grey patina on the iron with some light flash pitting. The nose cap/band is absent. The stock is fine with some minor cracks, filler, and repair in the forestock and otherwise scattered minor dings. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
LOT 3229 Bennett Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss - NSN, 14 gauge, 14 1/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The multi-stage barrel flares out to around 1 1/4 inches at the muzzle and has Ordnance private proofs on the upper left and “ROYAL EXCHANGE LONDON” marked on the breech section. The lock has a large frizzen spring roller, a sliding safety on the stepped tail, and “BENNETT” marked at the center. The furniture is brass and has simple border engraving. The stock has dot and checkerboard checkering on the wrist. CONDITION: Fine with attractively aged patina visible on the brass barrel and furniture, gray patina and mild pitting on the lock, and general scratches and dings. The stock is also fine and has some slight cracks, minor loss below the tail of the lock, distinct checkering, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250

Early C. Perry British Brass Barrel Flintlock
Blunderbuss with Rootwood Stock - NSN, 1 inch gauge, 16 1/2 inch round bbl., bright finish, rootwood stock. This blunderbuss was produced c. 1700 by Charles Perry and features a stunning rootwood stock which was then in fashion. The brass barrel is signed “C-PERRY” on top and has scroll engraving, a “heart/CP” maker’s mark and London proofs on the upper left at the breech, and an engraved iron tang. The bore flares from an estimated 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches at the muzzle. The later lock is marked “BALES” and has a frizzen spring roller and light engraving. The furniture is brass, and the side plate is an attractive pierced scroll pattern.
CONDITION: Very good as restored, including mounting a later lock, with attractive aged patina on the brass barrel and furniture, dark patina on the lock, minor oxidation/pitting, and general mild wear. The stock is also very good and has stunning figure, a spliced repair at the nose of the lock, a few cracks, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000

Engraved Ketland & Co. Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss - NSN, 17 gauge, 15 1/2 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. late 18th century to early 19th century with a brass barrel with turned girdles, light engraving accents, and London proofs flanking a “TK” maker’s mark on the upper left at the breech. The gauge is estimated. Bore flares out to about 1 1/8 inches at the muzzle. The lock is signed “KETLAND/& Co”. The brass furniture has scroll, foliate, and martial engraving, and the trigger guard has an acorn finial. CONDITION: Very good with attractive aged patina on the brass, silver-gray and brown patina on the lock along with minor pitting, and
general mild overall wear including some scratches and dents on the stock. Mechanically fine. 187 Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
