Engraved Richard Jeffery Push Forward Underlever Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 2587, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Equipped with fine replacement browned Damascus steel barrels a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked (faintly) “ARMY NAVY C.S.L. LONDON”, light engraving at the breech, London nitro proofs, and chambers proofed for 1 1/8 oz. of shot (2 1/2 inch) with a single extractor. The barrels are fitted to a casehardened push forward underlever receiver with back action locks which all display attractive scroll engraving extending to the double trigger triggerguard, both tangs, and the rebounding hammers and surrounds “RICHARD JEFFERY” signed on either lockplate. The gun is mounted with a nicely figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings including the Deeley latch release and a straight grip stock with a blank gold inscription oval and a leather wrapped recoil pad. Included is a Thomas Ferney & Co. canvas and leather takedown case. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at “12” (.729 inches) and measured .733/.737 inches; choke constriction .004/.005 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.023 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 1 5/8 inch drop at heel; 15 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 2 oz. CONDITION: Very fine as professionally refinished, retaining 99% brown and casehardened finishes, some blue loss on the lower tang, some minor handling evidence, some pitting beneath the forend, some small gaps in the wood to metal fit, and crisp checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. The case is excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
LOT 3269 Rare Engraved Caron a Paris Single Barrel Pinfire Shotgun - Serial no. 4, 38 gauge, 25 3/4 inch round bbl., brown/French gray finish, hardwood stock. This rare pinfire shotgun dates to c. 1852-1871 and was manufactured by Caron of 20 Passage D’Opera in Paris. Caron was a gunmaker to Napoleon III. This interesting design features a lever at the breech that then allows the barrel to be twisted and slid forward for reloading. The browned Damascus twist barrel has a post front sight, and “Inver Caron a Paris, Arq. du S.M. l’Empereur” signed on top. The latch has an integral notch sight. The transition point on the barrel, “mule ear” lock, and furniture feature oak leaf and acorn engraving. The lock is also signed “Invon Caron” in a banner. Serial number “4” is on the lower tang. “SP” is marked on the wrist escutcheon. Includes an invoice from Jackson Arms on March 26, 1968. Pictured in Jackson Arms Catalog No. 25 from 1968 as item no. 550. CONDITION: Very good with 90% of the refinished brown remaining on the barrel and mostly smooth gray patina on the lock and furniture along with crisp engraving and some light oxidation. The stock is good and retains most of the ebonized finish and has mild scrapes and dings, a thin crack by the breech on the left, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine.
