M. Hartley Company (formerly Schuyler, Hartley & Graham) - Serial no. 1056, 45 ACP cal., 5 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Per the included factory letter, this pistol was
part of a ten-piece order shipped to the M. Hartley Company of New York City on July 20, 1906. M. Hartley Company was the final name of the firm Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, which, at it’s height, was the largest firearms dealer in the United States, a major supplier of military goods to the
Union Army during the Civil War, and the founders of the Union Metallic
Cartridge Company. Features fixed rounded blade front and notch rear sights, checkered round spur hammer with half-cock notch, checkered slide catch, exposed extractor, and early brass firing pin. The slide bears the two block, two line patent information and Colt address, with “AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 45 RIMLESS SMOKELESS” on the right side. The pins and small parts are finished in fine niter blue, with a casehardened hammer and checkered diamond pattern walnut grips.
CONDITION: Very fine, with 98% plus professionally restored high polish blue finish (consignor statements attribute the work to Turnbull), showing minor handling marks overall. The niter blue is bright and vivid, and the colors on the hammer are rich and strong. The recheckered grips are very fine, with only a few tiny dings. Mechanically needs work as hammer will not release
without disassembly.
