Exceptional, Special Order, Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Bolt Action Rifle in .22 Hornet - Serial no. 114889, 22 hornet cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue/gold finish, deluxe factory walnut stock. Manufactured in 1949. As Dean H. Whitaker states in his book The Model 70 Winchester 1937-1964”, “from 1937 until the late 1950’s, the custom shop at the Winchester factory produced special order Model 70’s on a continual basis”. During this time Winchester policy was “if the customer was willing to pay, the company was willing to play,” and almost any variation, within reasonable limits, was possible. Among the items available at extra cost were engraving, wood carving, extra fancy wood, metal inlays, special sights, and a variety of other features.
