The standing breech is grooved and is engraved with a mask, bird, and floral patterns. The flat beveled lock has “GRIFFIN” signed in a banner
below the gold lined guttered priming pan, a scene of a pack of dogs subduing their quarry at the center, a hare on the stepped tail behind
the sliding safety, and additional floral and martial trophy engraving. The blued trigger has engraved and filework scroll accents. The mounts
are silver. The trigger guard features a very ornate finial with a spread wing bird and also features a running hare with a dog in pursuit on the
bow. The pierced side plate features a scene of a seated hunter with his gun and his dogs in pursuit of game. The wrist escutcheon features
shot game on top and a dog on the bottom and has faint stippling at the center where an initial and/or coat of arms may have once been
inscribed. The buttplate has floral engraving around the screws, and the heel tang has a mask and shot game. The barrel is fastened with four
wedges, and the forend has a joint to the rear of the entry point to allow the gun to be taken down. The figured walnut stock also features
very elaborate raised relief foliate and shell carving at the upper tang and nicely shaped drop points. Norman R. Blank’s collection notes
indicate this gun came “from a German source.” This may have been Hans Schedelmann.
