Pair of J. & W. Richards Brass Barrel
Flintlock Pistols -A) J. & W. Richards
Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 9 1/4
inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured c.1808-1810 by Joseph and William Richards. The locks
are signed “J & W/Richards” and have lined borders. The smoothbore brass barrels
have private proofs flaking “R” on the upper left and engraved sighting flats at the
breech. The brass mounts also feature some
light engraving, the trigger guards have an
acorn finial, and the wrist escutcheons have
the initials “MH.”
CONDITION: Very good with attractively aged patina on the barrel and
mounts and dark brown patina on the lock. The refinished stock is split in the forend tip and has
darkened section on the right side of the wrist and minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
B) J. & W. Richards Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 9 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Very good with attractively aged patina on the barrel and mounts and dark brown patina on the lock. The
refinished stock has a split in the forend tip, a few thinner cracks, and mild wear. Mechanically fine.

Manufacture Royale de Versailles Model 1816 Flintlock
Pistol - NSN, 69 cal., 7 7/8 inch round bbl., bright finish,
walnut stock. This model was introduced after the final defeat and abdication
of Napoleon Bonaparte and the return of King Louis XVIII to power in 1815. The
pistol features a smoothbore barrel marked with “13ELON/I00” at the breech,
“MRE. ROYALE/DE VERSAILLES.” marked lock, brass mounts, and the king’s coat
of arms on the pommel.
CONDITION: Fine with gray and brown patina on the lock and barrel along with light
oxidation and pitting, attractively aged patina on the brass mounts, and generally minor
overall wear. The stock is very good and has a few faint hairline cracks and mild scratches
and dings. Mechanically fine.

British India Pattern Third Model Brown Bess Flintlock Musket - NSN, 79 cal., 39 inch round bbl., bright
finish, walnut stock. It has the Georgian cipher and “TOWER” on the lock, London commercial proofs flanking “*/JL” on the
barrel at the breech, faint Honorable East India Company markings on the top of the barrel, additional faint markings on the left
stock flat, bayonet stud/front sight on top near the muzzle, brass furniture, and smooth stock with “31866” on the left side of the comb.
CONDITION: Good with fairly bright barrel and lock, aged patina on the brass furniture which has some dents/chips, gap between the pan
and vent, and general mild wear. The stock is fair and has some spots of discoloration, extensive scrapes and dents, some cracks and chips,
and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.

LOT 1214
Long English Flintlock Fowling Gun - NSN, 9 cal., 60 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This c. late 18th century sporting gun features an extremely long
smoothbore barrel that measures nearly 5 ft in length and around .80 caliber (9 bore) with a brass blade front sight, Ordnance private proofs on the left at the breech, some light
engraving at the breech end, and a grooved tang. The musket style lock has St. Edward’s crown without “GR” at the center and “COOK” at the tail. The mounts are engraved brass, and the trigger
guard includes an acorn finial. The half-length stock has a contrasting forend tip and a checkered wrist. The consignor states they purchased this gun out of New York, and indicates it is similar to a
Hudson Valley fowler.
CONDITION: Good as reconverted to flintlock with dark gray
and brown patina and moderate pitting on the barrel, mix
of dark patina and applied finish on the lock, aged patina
on the brass mounts, added screw to the trigger guard
finial, and mild overall wear, including some scrapes, dings,
and minor cracks on the stock. Mechanically fine.

W.J. King Commercial India Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket - NSN, 75 cal., 39 inch round bbl.,
bright finish, walnut stock. This commercial production “India pattern” variation “Brown Bess” musket was manufactured by
William James King of Birmingham c. 1824-1837. There are a few other known examples of these W.J. King made muskets. These were
made for the commercial market which would have included the many privately armed volunteer units of the era. It features a bayonet lug that
also serves as the front sight near the muzzle, Birmingham proofs at the breech, “W.J. KING” at the center of the lock, brass furniture, and a walnut stock.
CONDITION: Good with gray and brown patina, mild oxidation/pitting, aged patina on the mounts, and mild overall wear. The stock is poor with multiple spliced sections, some chips, and dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
