three soldiers on each side facing off over
“ROXBURY - 1775” and a central band reading
“CALEB WEBB - BOSTON-”. The base plug is a
simple rounded piece with a small iron loop,
and the throat has a faceted tip and wood
stopper. The Siege of Boston started on April
19, 1775, and continued until March 17, 1776.
During this period, control of the high ground
at Roxbury allowed the Patriots to largely
contain the British in Boston.

moderate wear at the base end.
Estimate: 5,000 - 7,500
LOT 1236
Historic Documented Engraved Powder Horn with “John Wood Berry 1773” Inscription - This
stunning horn is number 966 listed in “American Engraved Powder Horns: A Study Based on the
J.H. Grenville Gilbert Collection” by Stephen V. Grancsay and is identified as then in the collection of
Clarence L. Ford of Los Angeles. It is inscribed “IOHN x WOOd BERRY/1773 x TAKE x NOT x THIS/HORN x
FOR x FEAR x OF/SHAME x FOR x HEAR/ YOU x SEE x THE ONERS/NAME” and has additional chevron and
rounded scale patterns. The rounded base plug is secured by wood pins and has a small iron loop. The
throat has raised rings and a carved stopper. The identity of John Woodberry (possibly Woodbury) is not
clear although it was a fairly common name in North America in the period. One John Woodberry of
John Woodberry & Co. was a merchant active in South Carolina in the 1770s selling a variety of goods,
including at the time slaves. Captain John Woodbury Sr. (1749-1831) of Captain John Putnam’s company
of Minutemen from Sutton, Massachusetts, and later the 5th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer
Militia and Lieutenant John Woodbury (1752-1821) of Captain Reuben Dickson’s company in Colonel
Porter’s Regiment and later Captain Sylvanus Smith’s company in Colonel Timothy Bigelow’s regiment
both served the patriot cause during the American Revolution.
CONDITION: Very good with distinct engraving, mild wear, and some chipping at the front turned ring.
Provenance: The Clarence L. Ford Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500
