LOT 1415
Exceptional Documented Tokyo Arsenal Baby Nambu Semi-Automatic Pistol
with Matching Magazine, Photographed in “Axis Pistols” by Jan
Still - Serial no. 4815, 7 mm Nambu cal., 3 1/4 inch round bbl., blue/
straw finish, hardwood grips. Manufactured by the Tokyo Arsenal from
1909 to 1928, the Baby Nambu was the semi-official officer’s pistol of
the Imperial Japanese Military; officers would privately purchase their
sidearms, with the Baby Nambu presented as the local alternative to
imports from firms like Colt, FN and Walther. This exact Baby Nambu
pistol is photographed in Jan C. Still’s reference book “Axis Pistols”
on page 296 (Figure 90c). Fixed sights, with the “stacked cannonball”
arsenal marking on top of the chamber and the nomenclature
markings and serial number on the right side of the frame.
Fitted with checkered grips and a nickel finished,
alloy base magazine. The firing pin retainer is one
number away from the gun with “416” (likely a factory
error), with otherwise matching visible serial numbers
including the insides of the grips and the magazine.
The lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity
from noted author Jan C. Still’s family verifying it is from
his personal collection, and a copy of his book
“Axis Pistols”.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% original blue
finish with some finish wear on the left leading edge
and grip straps turned to a smooth brown patina, a small
patch of pitting visible at the muzzle, and 60% original
straw colors on the small components. Grips are excellent
with minimal handling evidence and crisp checkering.
Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Jan Still Luger Collection.
Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
