Inscribed Griffin & Howe Built Model 1903 Bolt Action Sporting Rifle with Zeiss Scope - Serial no. 845, 30-06
cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Griffin & Howe is America’s oldest and most storied custom rifle
builder with a history reaching back over 100 years. The firm has built rifles for many famous Americans, most notably renowned authors
and sportsmen Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark as well as President Dwight Eisenhower who all had sporting rifles built by the firm. This rifle was built with
a ramped beaded blade front sight set on a matted ramp sight base with a central sling loop, and “No. 845 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK.” along the top as well as the
caliber marking “.30/06 GOV.” on the left side of the chamber. The blued action has a matted front receiver ring with engraved borders, jeweled bolt, a Lyman peep sight,
and Griffin & Howe quick detachable scope mount holding a Zeiss Zielklein scope. The rifle is mounted in a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with horn
tip, engraved casehardened steel grip cap, silver inscription oval marked “W.R.R/La VIELLE/LOUISVILLE/KY.”, raised cheekpiece, rear sling eyelet, and a checkered steel trapdoor buttplate.
The inscription is was likely for William Robinson Ray LeVielle
Jr. who worked as the secretary of the Niell-LaVielle Supply
Co. after leaving his position as president of Universal Radio
Supply Co. During his service in World War II, he was a group
communications officer and was awarded a bronze star in 1948.
CONDITION: Very good as built by the world renowned firm of
Griffin & Howe, retaining 85% original blue finish with scattered
handling marks, and light surface spotting on the metal. The
stock is good with dings and scratches, chips at the receiver tang, and overall crisp stock checkering. Mechanically excellent. Optics clear, reticle crisp.

Game Scene Engraved Griffin & Howe Marked Pre-World War II Winchester
Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle with Scope - Serial no. 8721, 222 Rem cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The
action was manufactured in 1937 as subsequently beautifully upgrade to the current configuration. The rifle has a blued
Winchester Proof Steel barrel which features an Germanic scroll engraved ramped hooded beaded blade front sight, a front sling stud,
filler block in the rear sight dovetail, two separate wedges of Germanic scroll engraving around the factory markings, and “GRIFFIN & HOWE”
engraved on the top of the barrel. The barrel is marked “222 REMINGTON” below the factory markings with “22 HORNET” lightly struck out. The barrel is mated with
a blued action which displays a matching engraved Griffin & Howe scope mount holding a Weaver K4 60-B scope and an engraved bolt handle with acorn style knob. The
bottom metal is engraved with more Germanic scroll, a classically styled running bull elk on the floorplate in beautiful detail, and a “JL” monogram on the triggerguard. The rifle
is mounted is a gorgeous highly figured and multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with horn forend tip, engraved trapdoor grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece, rear sling stud, and a
blued steel checkered trapdoor buttplate. While the work on this
rifle is highly attractive, the Griffin & Howe marking is spurious.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally upgraded, retaining
90% of the blue finish with most of the loss on top of the
barrel, some softening and subsurface pits on the floorplate,
minor handling evidence, and sharp checkering on the stock.
Mechanically excellent. Scope optics clear.
