LOT 1035
Neil Hartliep Engraved and Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 92 Lever Action
Carbine - Serial no. 971597, 44 WCF cal., 20 inch round bbl.,
blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured between 1921 and
1928 and subsequently engraved and gold inlaid by Master
Engraver Neil Hartliep. Hartliep made a name for himself
as an engraver during the 1950s and 1960s, culminating in
him leaving his job at the chamber of commerce to become
a full time engraver in 1964. At the end of the 1970s, the
NRA decided to offer summer courses to give the average
person a basic level understanding of gunsmithing. For
these classes Hartliep was chosen to teach the introductory
sessions. A previous sale listing for this carbine lists it as being
documented in Hartliep’s “The Basics of Firearms Engraving: A
Manual of the NRA Gunsmithing Schools Program” on pages 1,
102, and 106. Fitted with a fine beaded blade front and standard folding ladder
rear sight. The barrel is inlaid with a gold band flanked by thin engraved bands
and a splash of floral scroll coming off the leafy band at the breech.
