Desirable Colt Etched Panel New Police “Cop & Thug” Gripped
Spur Trigger Revolver with Rare Extra Length Barrel - Serial no.
15994, 38 CF cal., 6 inch round bbl., nickel finish, hard rubber grips. Manufactured in
1882, these “Cop & Thug” gripped New Police revolvers are admittedly among the most
attractive antique Colts and are very scarce. Less than 4,000 are believed to have been
manufactured between 1882 and 1886. This example has the 6 inch barrel with ejector. The New Police was
the only revolver of Colt’s “New Line” that came with an ejector rod standard. The two-line address is marked
on top of the barrel and the crisp etched panel on the left is marked “NEW POLICE 38”. The left of the frame is
marked “38CAL”. It is fitted with a fixed round blade front sight. The grips have “COLT” at the top and a police
officer restraining a thug’s knife armed hand while pointing a Colt revolver at his chest at the bottom.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus of the original nickel finish with some scattered minor flaking, a few patches
of light pitting, and a crisp acid etched panel. The grips are very fine with a few very light handling marks, distinct imagery, and
crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection.
