Desirable Documented Engraved Daniel Border Bedford Side by Side Percussion Combination
Gun - NSN, 36 cal., 42 3/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/bright/silver finish, curly maple stock. Daniel
Border (1826-1891) was a talented gunmaker, jeweler, locksmith, watchmaker, and silversmith in Bedford,
Pennsylvania, working earlier on with firearms before transitioning into his other trades. This rifle is illustrated on page 55 of “Gunsmiths of Bedford,
Somerset, and Fulton Counties” by the Whiskers and page 56 of “Gunsmiths of Bedford, Fulton, Huntingdon, & Somerset Counties” by Whisker and
Yantz. The locks are each signed “D B” and have “wiggle” line border engraving. The right barrel is rifled and approximately .36 caliber, and the left
is smoothbore and approximately .40 caliber. Each barrel has a dovetailed blade front sight and a dovetailed U-notch rear sight. The gun features
adjustable double set triggers and brass mounts, including a classic Bedford patchbox with engraving. The curly maple stock has molding terminating
in scrolls on the forend, a silver heart shaped wrist escutcheon, and cheekpiece. The rifle appears to have been shortened by about 1 5/8 inches based on the new pins and
filled old pin holes.
CONDITION: Very good with patches of dark brown finish in the protected areas, smooth dark patina on the balance of the barrels and locks, repaired right hammer, attractively aged
patina on the silver and brass, and mild wear. The stock is also fine and has attractive flame figure, mold scratches and dings, flash wear at the breech, and mild wear. The ramrod is
broken. Mechanically fine.
Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
