Exceptional Documented Factory Engraved Colt Officer’s Model
Target Double Action Revolver with Relief Carved Steer Head
Grip and Factory Letter - Serial no. 563580, 38 Long Colt cal., 6 inch
round bbl., blue finish, carved grips. This is a highly attractive, extremely
high condition example of pre-World War II Colt artistry. This Officer’s Model
features elaborate deeply cut factory class “C” engraving consisting primarily of
scrollwork on finely stippled background. Leaf patterns decorate the underside of
the frame and butt. Even the top strap is engraved with the scrollwork pattern.
The engraving covers nearly all of the frame aside from the knurled back strap
and smooth front strap, and the engraving on the barrel includes double
bands engraved at the muzzle and floral patterns flanking the two-line Colt
address/patent dates marking on top and “OFFICERS MODEL 38” on the left
side. Scrollwork surrounds the Rampant Colt marking on the side plate. The
revolver is fitted with elevation adjustable front and windage adjustable
rear sights. A star burst is engraved behind the rear sight. The hammer
spur and trigger are checkered. The revolver wears a set of replacement
Colt silver medallion grips featuring a relief carved steer head on the right
panel. Matching serial numbers appear on the inside of the frame and
crane. The accompanying factory letter states the revolver was shipped
to Abercrombie & Fitch Co. of New York City on June 12, 1930, to order
number 18254/2 with a 6 inch barrel in .38 caliber, blue finish, class “C”
factory engraving, and pearl stocks. The revolver was featured on the
winter 2014 cover of The Rampant Colt (issue included) when it was
wearing a set of pearl grips featuring a relief carved buffalo on the right
panel. The revolver was part of the “The Colt Officers Model Revolver
1904-1971” display at the 2014 annual Colt Collectors Association show
held in Concord. This display was awarded Best of Show, First Place/Double
Action Revolvers, and Best Educational awards.
