British Proofed Auto-Ordnance/
Savage Model 1928 Thompson
Submachine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable Machine Gun with Extra
Drum Magazine - Serial no. S-93817, 45 ACP cal., 10 1/2 inch fluted bbl., blue finish,
walnut stock. Blade front sight on the Cutts-marked compensator and Lyman folding
ladder rear sight, with the signature ribbing on the rear of the barrel, dual pistol grips,
and a quick detach buttstock. The model and caliber markings are present on the left
side of the frame, with the Auto-Ordnance address and patent dates on the right. The
trigger housing is numbered to match the receiver, with checkered
selector and safety switches. The internals are 1928 pattern, with
the thin, light recoil spring, Blish lock, and oiler. In addition to the
standard markings, a number of British proofs have been added,
with a set of nitro proof/tonnage markings on top of the barrel
ahead of the ribbing, “W in crown” on the left side of the receiver,
“broad arrow” on the right, and a “crown/GP” on the charging
handle and on top of the receiver, as well as a set of sling swivels
on the left side of the foregrip and on the comb of the buttstock,
a configuration associated with British-issued Thompsons. While
not explicitly documented, the markings and features suggest this
Thompson SMG was supplied to Great Britain as part of Lend-Lease for use during
World War II. Two Type “L” drum magazines are included.
CONDITION: Fine, with 80% of the arsenal refurbished matte blue finish, showing
some areas of thinning, patches of pitting, and mild dings and handling marks
overall. Some tool marks are present on top of the trigger housing, and the
ejector port shows some touched-up finish. The wood is very good as repaired and
revarnished, with mild scuffing and dings. Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon
is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios
or Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to
the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479.
