New York Engraved Smith & Wesson Number 1 1/2 2nd Issue Revolver with Ivory
Grips - Serial no. 96342, 32 RF cal., 3 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, antique ivory grips.
This model was manufactured in 1868-75 with this example displaying a wonderful and
profuse period New York engraving. The engraving consists mostly of floral scrollwork on
beaded background along with zig-zag line and star burst motifs. An intriguing open mouth
serpent appears in the center of the scrollwork on the left side of the frame. Matching
assembly marks appear on the grip frame, cylinder, and barrel. Includes a modern custom
made French cut case containing a cartridge block holding ten rounds.
CONDITION: Very fine as period New York engraved, retaining 95% plus of the original nickel
plating. The engraving is crisp. The grips are also very fine with minimal handling marks and
highly attractive color and grain. Mechanically excellent. The modern case is excellent.
Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel and cylinder retain 85%
original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and a couple
of small patches of light pitting towards the muzzle. The frame retains
98% plus original nickel finish. The grips are excellent with a few handling marks and very attractive grain
and color. A factory “pinto” S&W Number 1 1/2 2nd Issue Revolver that is a must have for the serious collector.

Rare and Highly Desirable “Pinto” Smith & Wesson Number 1 1/2
2nd Issue Revolver with Ivory Grips - Serial no. 47434, 32 RF cal., 3 1/2
inch solid rib bbl., blue/nickel finish, antique ivory grips. This model was
manufactured in 1868-75 with this example having the rare and highly
desirable two-tone or “pinto” finish. The barrel and cylinder are blued,
and the frame is plated in nickel. Nicknamed “pintos” by collectors, these
type of finish was available on a special order basis only. Standard finish
for this model was full blue or full nickel, making these two-tones a rarity
in S&W collecting. This example is in high condition making it even more
desirable. The top of the barrel has the standard one-line S&W legend.

grip frame, cylinder, and barrel.
