Scarce Parker Brothers 28 Gauge VHE Grade Double Barrel Shotgun -
Serial no. 238798, 28 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish,
walnut stock. Manufactured post 1934 during the Remington era as one of
only 772 manufactured in this configuration per the chart on page 258 of “The
Parker Story” by Gunther, Mullins, Parker, Price, and Cote and even fewer still,
only 17%, were made with ejectors making this a very rare and desirable gun.
The grade, gauge, barrel length, and ejectors below are confirmed on page
598 of “Parker Gun Identification & Serialization” by Price and Fjestad, though
the stock is not listed.
The gun was built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the
matted concave solid rib which is marked “PARKER BROS. MAKERS. MERIDEN.
CT. U.S.A. VULCAN. STEEL” as well as chambers measured 2 3/4 inches with
automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to size “00” casehardened boxlock
action which displays the standard Grade V zig-zag border engraving with
“PARKER” on the underside and features double triggers and a tang mounted
automatic safety. The gun is fitted with a nicely figured and multi-point
checkered splinter forend as well as a round knob pistol grip stock with blank
silver inscription shield and Parker dog’s head buttplate.
Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from
the breech .551/.552 inches; choke constriction .014/.021 inches;
minimum wall thickness .028/.027 inches; 1 5/8 inch drop at comb; 2
3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; weight 5 lbs. 12 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue finish on
the barrels, 95% vivid casehardened finish, some loss of blue on
the triggerguard which has turned, minor handling evidence, a few
tiny freckles of spotting, a couple tiny dings on the wood, and sharp
checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. A great
chance to own an exceptional example of a scarce small bore Parker!
