Attractive Gold Greco-Roman Themed
Cane - Starting in the 16th Century, canes
and walking sticks became extremely
popular, first among royalty and nobility,
and by the 19th and 20th Centuries
having worked their way down to the
middle classes as a symbol of status. The
handle is an octagonal faceted gold knob
with the bust of a Greco-Roman looking
man on top bordered by a gold wreath
and on the vertical portion alternating
facets are decorated with a variety of
items including: cornucopia and rake, bird
and torch, lute and trumpet, and a bird,
bow, and quiver. The musical instruments
suggest that this was a musician’s cane.
All of these are topped with gold floral
bunting with floral wreathes in the
alternating facets. There are several
touchmarks around the bottom of the
handle. Just below that in the shaft is
a hole with gold
escutcheons for
a lanyard. The
shaft is of a light
springy wood with
an iron ferrule
at the tip.
CONDITION: Fine,
the gold showing
mostly bright with
minimal handling
evidence, the shaft
showing some mild
crazing throughout,
a few scattered minor
handling marks, and
a few dark spots, with
the iron ferrule mostly
a smooth
plum patina.

LOT 3157
Unique Cane with Horn Grip
and Eagle Scrimshawed
Shaft - By the mid to late 19th
century, canes had reached the
pinnacle of their popularity,
permeating nearly every strata
of society. This example appears
to be from around the middle
of the century, with its patriotic
theme indicating that it was
quite possibly made around
the time of the Civil War or one
of the conflicts of the early
20th century. The grip of this
example is made of a section
of horn which is plugged with
a pearl disc. below the grip
is a 6 5/8 inch section of the
shaft which is made of a very
nicely figured piece of wood
and has a scrimshawed eagle
with its wings spread. The shaft
below that is more standard
figure malacca with a black
spacer and iron tip. It measures
approximately 36 inches overall.
CONDITION: Very good, the grip
showing some minor handling
marks and mild wear, and the
shaft has moderate crazing of
the varnish throughout and
some minor handling marks.

Attractive Cane with Damascene
Gold Inlaid Handle - This eye
catching cane is topped with
a beautiful floral and border
engraved gold inlaid handle
featuring a winged dragon at the
top of the handle. Hard wood shaft
with a German silver ferrule at the
tip. The overall length is
35 5/8 inches.
CONDITION: Very fine overall,
attractive bright gold damascene
surfaces on the handle with
crisp engraving, and a few minor
handling marks on the shaft with
one small chip right below
the handle.

Attractive Relief Carved Antique
Ivory Jockey Head Cane - During
the 19th and 20th centuries, canes
reached their pinnacle of popularity,
becoming a must have accessory for
those wishing to publicly proclaim
their social and economic status.
This timeline coincides very closely
with the popularity arc of horse
racing, especially in the United States,
making crossover pieces such as
this example unsurprising. The knob
shaped grip of this cane has been
expertly carved in the form of a man’s
head wearing a multi-faceted jockey’s
helmet. The grip is joined to the shaft
with a thin silvered band. The shaft
appears to be of smooth fruitwood
and is tipped with antique ivory.
CONDITION: Fine, the grip showing
an attractively ages tone with some
scattered hairline age cracks. The
shaft and tip are very fine with only
the slightest handling marks.
