LOT 87
Exceptional Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. 138, 44-40 WCF cal., 7 1/2 inch round bbl.,
nickel finish, walnut grips. This is a excellent and totally original example of a Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver. These
revolvers were manufactured circa 1875 to 1889 with a total production of only about 25,000. The top of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON &
SONS. ILLION. N.Y. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is stamped “44” in front of the cylinder indicating the revolver is chambered for the .44-40 cartridge.
The serial/batch number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip. All nickel finish, manufactured without a lanyard on the butt, and fitted with
smooth two-piece walnut grips. Considerable mystery surrounds the Model 1875. There are no known U.S military contracts. In 1883 about 1,300 nickel plated
revolvers were purchased by the Interior Department for use by Indian Police on the Western reservations, 10,000 were purchased by the Egyptian Government
and the Mexican Government purchased 1,000 in the 1880s. Writer believes this exceptional example escaped those contracts due to its excellent condition.
CONDITION: Excellent. The revolver retains 95% plus of the untouched original nickel finish with some minor flaking on the muzzle and front sight blade, and
some speckled flaking and edge wear on the cylinder. The grips are very fine with a few minor dings on the bottoms and some minor wear on the lower edges.
The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Gateway Collection.
Estimate: 7,500 - 11,000
LOT 88
Desirable Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Double Action
Revolver - Serial no. 7664, 44-40 WCF cal., 3 1/4 inch round bbl., nickel
finish, hard rubber grips. This is one of several variations of Merwin, Hulbert
& Co.’s large frame revolvers manufactured exclusively by Hopkins & Allen in
the 1870s and 1880s. Several thousand are estimated to have been produced. This
example has integral round blade and top strap notch sights, checkered grips, the two-line
Hopkins & Allen address/patent dates on the left barrel side, “CALIBER/WINCHESTER 1873” on the left side of
the frame, and “MERWIN HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY” on the right side of the frame. The serial number is
on the butt, and the assembly number “4824” appears on the left side of the front strap under the grip, rear cylinder
face and barrel lug.
CONDITION: Very fine. The revolver retains 95% original nickel finish showing some light flaking and a few moderate handling marks. The hammer and trigger guard retain
70% original case colors. The grips are fine with a repaired chip (right panel), a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Jerry Danuser Collection.
Estimate: 5,000 - 7,000
