Stunning Factory Presentation Engraved, Gold Gilt Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 First Issue 2nd Type Revolver with Ivory Grips, Distinctive “Bayonet”
Latch, and “Stand of Flags” Gutta Percha Case - Serial no. 1109, 22 RF cal., 3 3/16 inch solid rib bbl., blue/gold finish, ivory grips. Manufactured c. 1858, this is a
stunning example of a Smith & Wesson No. 1 First Issue 2nd Type revolver that is beautifully factory engraved and gold gilt, and is quite possibly one of the earliest
Smith & Wesson’s to be engraved. These First Issue 2nd Type revolvers featured the distinctive and desirable “bayonet” barrel latch, which was used solely on the 1st
and 2nd Type Model No. 1s. Between these first two variations, only about 1,130 produced with this type latch, making them very scarce in any condition. The gold
gilt frame features near full coverage, beautifully executed, exhibition quality factory floral scroll engraving, which continues down the back strap, on to the cylinder,
and on the sides of the barrel at the breech. The one-line address is marked on top of the barrel rib. The matching serial number is marked at the toe of the butt,
front face of the cylinder, rear face of the barrel lug, and in pencil inside both grip panels. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a notch rear sight on
top of the cylinder catch, as well as a very attractive pair of smooth ivory grips. Includes a scarce and desirable Gutta Percha case with the “Stand of Flags” motif on
the lid with blue floral patterned lining inside the lid and red baize lined lower half, as well as a cleaning rod.
