LOT 206
Fine British India Pattern Third Model Brown Bess Flintlock
Musket - NSN, 75 cal., 39 3/8 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut
stock. This fine example of a British military India Pattern Brown Bess
musket has what appears to be an “1800” dated storekeeper stamp on
the right side of the butt. The India Pattern muskets were the standard
issued muskets of the British military in the early 19th century during
the Napoleonic Wars. Standard Georgian royal cipher and “TOWER”
markings on the lock, crown proofs at the
upper left of the breech and on the barrel
tang, “DAWSON” stamped on the left stock
flat, and a pair of crown stamps behind the tail of the trigger guard. Large
carved “H” ahead of a broad arrow and another carved “H” on the left of the buttstock.
CONDITION: Fine and well above average as a British military issued Brown Bess, retains half of the
faded brown finish on the barrel, bright silvery-gray and brown patina on the lock and components,
some patches of minor pitting, with sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is also
fine, with fine figure, scratches and dents, a small crack behind the barrel tang, a few chips, and
outstanding defined edges and stamps (very difficult to find in one of these!). Mechanically excellent. Overall,
an attractive Third Model Brown Bess that would be difficult to improve upon!
Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
